Well if someone with rebuild exp. would take a look and see if this list looks right it would help alot the only thing not on the list is the new forward piston but bulkpart. did not have a listing on it so i am guessing it is a ford item.

Only a handfull of us have actually done our own ATXs, the rest have been done by a shop.

That's www.bulkpart.com not bulkpartS for anyone else, BTW.

I ordered the T2400 kit and the required spring compressor from ebay vendors.

The tech manual I ordered wasn't needed. I did not use the bushing kit. The thrust washers were used but probably weren't needed.

Do add the VSS. If it fails afterwards, you will wish you had.

I used the Superior shift kit instead of the Trans-go on the recommendation of Mike Yeager (SHO#7). I'm happy with it now. I did not use the **** Dam kit. Also, on his recommendation, I bought the largest stacked cooler available.

Plan on replacing the forward clutch piston with the steel one. If the transmission has never been replaced, it's still got the aluminum one in there. I bought the steel piston from a local dealer for about $60. Bulkpart does carry it, look under DRUMS, about $70.

I also reused my turbine shaft and sprag as they were in good condition.

When diassembling, TAG the EPC and TCC solenoid leads. They're physically interchangeable. Don't ask me how I found that out. The shift solenoid leads are not interchangeable.

I also bought a copy of the ATSG video off ebay along with the rebuild handbook. The video gave details about how to tear down the tranny and tips on how to put it back together. Things it didn't cover were VB/pump service and the individual pistons/drums. Overall, it was worth it to me since I had never been inside any auto tranny before.

The Ford Service CD (or the factory AX4S manual set) is mandatory.

Ask if you need anything else.

Thanks for the help, I wanted to make sure I was on the right track. I just replaced the vss about a week ago thats why its not on the list, as far as the video and spring compressor i will look on ebay for those. Is the ATSG tech. manual (not the update manual) the best to have or the update manual, I all ready ordered the tech. manual.

The ATSG manual and its update are pretty much irrelevent if you have the Ford documentation. It's just a reprint of the Ford (early version) procedures. A lot of the info in the original book is for the AXODE/E only.

My local O'Reilly's could have gotten the spring compressor for me, but I had already ordered one by the time I found this out. If you are relatively handy and have a decent shop, you can probably make your own as I recall someone reported having done. Cost was less than $80 for the K-D # 2398 I bought. This tool is useable, but I wouldn't but it again. PITA.....kept popping out of the ring groove when pressure was applied to compress the spring. If I had to do it again, I'd buy the ATEC T-0158-HD for just over $100.

I know this is an old post, but so far it's been pretty helpful as to what I shoud get. I'm fixing to make an order from Makco and was noticing on their website that they have listed a low/int band number B86020 AND B86020-g with a blue dot. Would there be any difference? Short of taking mine apart before I order parts, is there any way to know if my unit will require the "blue dot" piece? Thanks, Rudy.

Give them a call or email them. They're pretty good about supporting customers.

FWIW, the "blue-dot" is specc'ed for 95-97 AX4S, probably doesn't apply to yours.

thanks Steve, T2400 kit, what is that? is that the servo tools?

The T2400 kit is the lip seal protectors. They are needed when inserting the pistons into each of their respective drums. Keeps the circular seals compressed so that you can get the thing inserted without damaging the seals.
