Did a quick search but I can't find anything.... :frown:

My buddy has a 93ATX which the P/S pulley has stripped either the pulley itself of the splines on the pump (from what I can tell).

The pulley can spin independent of the pump, but it can still turn it with some force.

Anyone have suggestions on how to remove the nut from the pump? It's not as easy as it sounds, as the pulley is not seated properly on the splines(as they are probably gone) so the pulley is very close to the nut making it hard/impossible to get a ratchet in there. Which has a problem in itself as the pump is still turning.

What i thought of doing was putting some vise-grips on the "stud" and use some needle nose vice-grips for the nut. This seems to be the only option.

Yer gonna need a pep talk...and a Peptobismol...

Remove the pump with the pulley attached. This may involve separating the subframe from the engine and the body...at least in the rear. Theres just no other easy solution. You can fight with the nut all day or just be done with it...hopefuly the subframe nuts wont fight too hard. Don't forget to disconnect the steering at the rack or remove rack from subframe. Lower the subframe and engine until there is interference, then lower the subframe some more. You should be able to get the pump out the bottom past the trans...if not, it's "pop the axle" time.

I know this works on MTXs. I havent tried it on an ATX, but I would definately be looking there.

I might even tilt the engine back(lowering just the drivers side of the subframe) and take it out the top. If he(your friend) has aluminum SFB, don't forget to really loosen those suckers up all the way around.

OR... try to hacksaw the pump shaft off between the housing and the pully...gotta sawzall?

There is not even that much room to saw it off.. :frown: But I would like to confirm that the splines are gone before I rip into it like that.

maybe you didn't read it right James... The pulley is not attached to the pump via splines anymore. I can hold the pulley and still turn the pump. :thumb:

Was this an aluminum under drive pully, or a stock steel one? I remember seeing a picture of one of the original aluminum under drive pulley sets shearing at the splines, but I would be interested to see a steel one have the same failure??

Did you have any steering problems and what is the color of the fluid? I'm curious more than anything??
