I've noticed lately that something seems to be up with my ATX. If I get on it and then let off, it seems that the tranny spins a bit, like it's in neutral, before it shifts. Also, this has happened twice, I've pushed the gas and it would spin like it was in neutral before it "felt" like the gears caught. Is my tranny going south? It was rebuilt at 92k miles and is at 109k now. It seems a little premature, though I know it means nothing with an ATX. If it is going out, any rough time table? If I can get by till the spring I'll be happy. Thanks guys.

Not all rebuilt trannys are equal. You did not say what year your tranny was. The 93's are the worst. The 94-95 trannys are much better, steel pistons, servos, and other upgrades. I just happen to have a very good 94' ATX in my garage looking for a nice home.

Mine's a 95...from what the previous owner told me, it was never quite right till after he had it rebuilt. Perhaps it's reverting back to it's old state.

How many miles on the tranny? Price?

When you say getting on it and then letting off, are you getting on it hard enough to initiate a downshift and the letting off and getting right back on? I'm just asking because my mom's 2000 Grand Marquis does this. She took off from a rolling (15-20MPH) stop and gunned it hard, forcing a 2-1 downshift. She promptly let off and then got right back on, and it felt like it slipped and then engaged 2nd again. She thought that the transmission was already on its way out with only about 8000 miles on the car. It seems to be the nature of these electronically shifted Ford transmissions. My guess is that they just get caught between gears for a moment in those kinds of situations, especially the stock softer shifted ones. Just my 2 cents.

No not like that. What I mean is just going down the road, I'll hit the gas (doesn't have to down shift) and it'll get some speed. But if I then let off it, it sounds and feels like it spins a bit before upshifting.

As far as I know that is normal and it is done in case you decide to punch the gas again.

For instance, from a stop, put the pedal to the floor and then completely let go at say 5000 rpm. The engine will wind down a second and then shift. It's sensing the throttle position. All is well. :)
