I just pulled my ax4s out of a 157,000 mile car that started having slipping issues in drive/forward gears. Anyway, I have the ax4s in my garage and I just set it up on some blocks so that the side pan faces directly up. As I tipped it up, some fluid drained out of the axle hole (passengers side) and it looks like there is antifreeze mixed in with the Mercon (blotches of green watery etc within the red Mercon) that drained out of the axle hole. This tranny has definitely had some work done to it or is a replcement because the Vehicle speed sensor and the MLPS look brand new and also the case is relatively clean.....too clean to be the original unserviced 157,000 mile tranny. I pulled the converter and it looks really clean....the copper bearing (on the inside of the converter where it fits on the trans shaft) looks to have very little wear....if any. I pulled the side pan off the case and the internals there are clean but there was a hint of coolant residue in some places.....little drops of antifreeze.
Anyway, I am wondering what coolant in the ATF fluid does to the tranny....how or does it ruin the internals? Is it that the coolant ruins/degrades the lubricity of the ATF and cause clutches/frictions to burn up quicker? What should I pay attention to when tearing it apart and rebuilding it? Obviously something is fried since there is barely any forward gears......I am assuming forward clutches/frictions etc are ruined.
Any help/guidance is greatly appreciated.
