Thats the one... It used to come with an antenna...Thats the one I used years ago, and was talking about in the previous post. When your done, just unscrew and throw it in the trunk.

I think I've decided to pick up one of these cheaper ones. I've done some reading and I think the cheap Midland Unit, Uniden or the Cobra 19 compact will be good. I'm thinking a Lil Wil for the antenna...one about the length of the one on the SHO in the above pic. I want to be able to use it, but I don't need a top of the line deal. Just something to play with while I'm on the road.

How'd you route your antenna on your SHO from the trunk to the unit itself?

I think it'd be fun to pull in the truck stop and listen for a bit, ask if there are any Lot Lizards out there, etc. lol. Dan, I think the Phillips 66 Truck Plaza outside of Elkton on I-65 would make for some good listening...right there at the Boobie Bungalow.

BWAHAHAHA... Yes it does... I had to stop there one night(the truck stop) when I was over the road...They were working that CB HARD! Nowadays, I pass thru there early mornings when they're closed, so it's no fun.

Edit: Oh, and what I would do is run the cable from the CB, along the door sills, into the trunk. Then, I would route it through so it comes out the back of the trunk(the closest to the rear window). That way the wire isn't all over.

I registered for the forum on thetruckingreport.com; spent hours doing some interesting reading there....and apparently the twin Pilots in West Memphis, AR are "well known" and "well avoided" as some of the worst truck stops in the country. I've always been fascinated with that way of life; lots of interesting threads over there.

Oh yeah... That website saved me from starting out with a bad company...I was looking into Covenant as my first driving job...SOOOO glad I didn't LOL I stopped at one of those Pilots a few times...not too bad, the one on HWY 78 just outside of Memphis heading back toward Birmingham was MUCH worse...only stayed there once and that was during the day LOL.

I have a cobra 29 classic ltd and a wilson silver load 4ft antenna. Cant get the damn SWR tuned correctly. Its screwd in on the plastic near the lic place. should I ground the base to the frame of the car? Or just mount it to the trunk or roof?

I would think you need to be grounded to the frame, but I'm pretty terrible @ CB ins and outs...

After reading this thread, getting more curious and exploring the trucker forums, I bought a CB too, lol. I went cheap since I just plan to listen to the truckers on the road and occasionally talk. I went with the Uniden Pro510XL and a Lil' Wil antenna. It seems to work ok. Not sure it has that great of range though. The CB has been quiet lately--not alot of folks talk on there anymore. I was shocked at the silence at one truck stop, and the other had a conversation going about one guy's radio not working right, so they were testing it.

I was able to get a radio check and even talked to a driver or 2 on the road, so it seems to work fine. I have not permanently mounted mine because I don't want to drill holes in my car. Also, I'll be using it in several of my cars, so I don't want a permanent mount. I went to Radio Shack and bought a cigarette lighter adapter that has a postive and negative terminal, so I could just plug it into the 12V outlet and not run wires everywhere.

****, I never thought about Radio Shack! LOL Jeremy, it may depend on the time of day too as to the amount of radio traffic. I have rarely run through there, and it was a couple of years ago when I did, So I'm not much help...

Well I got everything set up a couple of weeks ago, but have just now got around to putting up pics. So here they are.

And the bracket I made. I still have to hide away some wires:

hahahaha I plan to commute from Tucson to Phoenix once I have my SHO down here. There are a ton of trucks that travel that highway. Plus when I'm traveling with other vehicles with CBs, we can chat.

In fact, I think I might have resurected the cb trend. Last summer I saw I modded STi with twin wilson 5000, a civic with a fart can and a wilson lil will and a very clean grand prix GTP with a wilson 1000.
I've also installed a cb in my friend '84 trans-am, and in another friend's 2000 ls1 firebird with a 4' fiberglass whip.
I see more and more cars with cbs. Now with cellular being illegal to use without hand free devices, chatting with other cars is much easier with a cb.

Haven't done any mods or tweaking to mine. I just bought a cheap little CB to listen to the truckers, but even around the local truckstops, there isn't much activity on 19.

It's all about timing Jeremy. Try it around 4-7pm. I fried my Cobra 29 swapping trucks the other morning... I just hope it's not going to take more than $100 to fix... :banghd:

Reverse polarity diode. Change it. Costs a buck for two at radio shack. Its near the power input. Two points to unsauder. Not too hard. First time saudering and I didnt mess anything up, and I had a crappy iron and shaky hands.
