You can buy the stuff from O Reileys' for ~$45 total and maybe cheaper other places. How involved is it and can a novice do it? I've got the starter all torn apart and was cleaning it up for when I do the engine swap, but figured why not add one more new part as long as I've got this spare laying around. Please let me know your thoughts, but I thought I remembered seeing Scott(sdpatt) posting something on this. Thanks!

i dont think its a bad idea if youre mechanically inclined to begin with, but is it really worth the trouble when a new lifetime waranteed one is only $100? i mean by all means if youre just looking for a challenge then go for it, but im a warantee kind of guy. just my thoughts.

my sentiments exactly.... the parts may end up being cheaper.... and through oreilly (i work there) i'm sure the internal parts you are pricing are borg warner parts which will have a lifetime warranty.... BUT

when you have a problem again would you rather do the project of rebuilding it...OR ... the quick unbolt it and bolt the new one up?

in my opinion its worth the extra few dollars to get the rebuilt starter with the lifetime warranty

I mess around with motors all day long, its not a very complex thing to do. Not much to "rebuilding" a motor (I use "rebuild" loosely; a true rebuild would actuall involve rewinding the armature and/or stator), mostly replacing the brushes, maybe the brush board, the bearings, and in the case of a starter, the bendix.
