You need to put solvent (carb cleaner or similar) on the areas to be welded to get the oil film and any buildup off there, and cover everything so that sparks, slag, etc. doesn't go places where you cannot have it (like on the cam lobes or shims), and when you are all done be sure to change the oil so the solvent, etc. gets out of the system right away.

Its always good to practice on a junk cam before you start on the 'real' thing, so you know that the settings are correct, etc.

Good luck!

Just welded mine last night. Two of us plus the best TIG welder I know. Took us six hours total. Lots of brake clean before you weld. Seems to be the most important factor. Took my parts guy 9 days and 12 states to find all the obsolete gaskets( I like NEW gaskets although I'm told you can reuse some of the old ones.) New Autolite Iridium XP plugs while I was in there. Rotated the coils front to back and heat shielded my harnesses in the back as well. All stuff I learned right here. My car is a white '97 with grey leather, 72K on it. I can finally give my Powerstroke a break from the Mon.-Fri. grind!

Go check www.V8sho.com and look for "cam weld details" and "cam weld to-do list" and please don't messed up your engine in the process. Get the welder an spare cam to practice before he does the engine cams.

I'm am proud of SHOForum this time.... I thought for certain there would be a massive ***** fest in this thread about certain cam welder rivalries and how they think each other are pieces of shit. :nut:
