So, I got real tired of listening to the chime while the doors were open to put in Babes speakers and so I took out the chime module. Voila!! No more check engine light!!. Hurray!!!@@>???? maybe not. I can put it back in when I need to run codes, ...but is there any other reason I don't know about to leave it off the car..??? It seems to be just fine...Fred??

Your gonna regret it the one time you leave your lights on and the chime isn't there to remind you. I had the same thought on my car because it use to bing when ever the door was opened and then one day I moved the steering wheel up and down a couple time, never did it again.

Thanks FL,
it just happened tonight when I went to the grocery store, but I'm pretty sure I can be more vigilant now that I know I won't have that back up, I was just wondering if anything else was not getting power that might need it because there isn't a continuos circuit..
Take care and thanks for the reply,
T

can't help you with that one, Terry, cause I never tried that. I recommend closing the doors when you drive - then the chime stops even with the module intact.

seriously, the chime issue is due to the switch in the steering column (on the key switch) being misadjusted or bad so that it doesn't sense the difference between the key being inserted and the key being removed. that is where to solve the problem.

I pulled mine out of my SHO and my Mercury Sable and didn't have any problems. I absolutely cannot stand that godforsaken bonging sound.

and so I took out the chime module. Voila!! No more check engine light!

Does the chime module connect to the check engine light somehow?

It doesn't, that just sounds like luck. I thought they all chimed when the door was open? There is a wire you can cut so that it doesn't, but I forget the color. Or just unplug the chime module.

Thank you guys...It does need the key cylinder assembly replaced, it is pretty worn, loose and sometimes doesn't go to the reset position clearly at all, and I have to monkey with it to get it to turn...I did the cylinder in a dodge and in a gm,,,is the ford just as easy???

And, that chime module must have something to do with the continuity for CE light, cause it has not gone on in 15 starts, drivings and stops/turn off...and it was on every time I drove. I'm sure the O2 sensors didn't just fix themselves and whatever was giving me the other couple codes too.
I did notice that sometimes it didn't bong when I left the door open. All three girls do it. so next time, I'll try the steering column up/down wiggle and see if it stops. Again they all could really use a new assembly, but it sure is nice not listening to it and seeing the ce light on all the time. The previous owner put electrical tape in front of the light, but of course you can still//could still see it.

If you find a helpful parts man, you should be able to get a replacement cylinder that has the same key cuts, so you don't have to use a different key for the door than the ignition. nearly always, in my experience, if the cylinder is loose like that the chime will go even when the key is out of the ignition.

The key cylinder is simple to replace, turn key to run and push in the pin with a pocket screwdriver while pulling the cylinder out. Also, you will notice the new cylinder will only have the first part of the key cut. There are 10 cuts in the key. If my memory serves me correctly, the first 6 cuts are the ignition and the remaining are for the door, so all you will need to do is have someone cut the door part using the old key. This is when you can remove the key chime - little brass tab with one wire (I believe black with pink stripe).

Thanks very much for your help guys, I'll pick them up soon, Andd....am I correct that replacing the key cylinder is not gonna fix a problem where the plastic black wing thingy that surrounds the key cylinder is loose and can go too far in either direction. ...or is it lucky enough that the black wings on the steering column ignition are part of the cylinder...probably not, That part is pretty loose on two of my three.

if I am following your description of the 'wingy thingy' then it will be replaced with the lock cylinder.

Thank you Fred, I called it that because to me it looks like a big wing nut with the key cylinder in the middle...

I drove Babe to work every day this week and no chime and no ce light, ever, so there must be some connection between the two circuits and continuity. When I'm not doing more important things, I'll plug it back in and see if the ce light is back on, I know it will be... but I shall report herein,

I took apart the chime plastic box and screwed a small screw into the top of the chime itself where there is a little hole at the top, tightened it just enough to have the screw tip touch the noisemaker inside. Now it is really quiet and sounds like a baby's nightlight, One more 1/4 twist an it is silent if I want that, but now at least I can have my ce light and be able to check codes without having to reinstall the thing each time
