I have a friend that works for an exhaust place that has a fast draw bender. He's offered to try and make up a y-pipe for the SHO... all the way back depending on how hard it is. They only use mild steel not SS, but I'm wondering if anyone would be interested.

I'll say in advance, I'm working with only my money and his time so it peobably won't be for at the least a few months before I get the first one fitted properly... maybe spring if I can't find garage space. Actually, I'm still trying to find a stock y-pipe and exhaust cheap so it might be more than a few months just for that. :laugh_ti:

Anyhoo, any interest? I'm also working with a friend in IL for some MIL eliminators just in case we get an 'offroad' version done first. I do have a high flow 3" single in/out cat, but I don't know how I'm going to like that yet.

I hate to be the VOD but we need more power down low and improving the Y-pipe won't do that.

Have you looked under there? There isn't very much room to route the pipes any differently.

I would look into getting jet-hot coating on the existing Y-pipe before I bothered trying to make a new Y-pipe.

The MIL can be eliminated with any SCT-type programming.

More power down low? New torque converter. That's what I do on every other car, higher stall to get you into the power band that you want. Do we not have those available?

Additionally, I haven't seen a single car not respond to beter flowing exhaust. Granted, it's only a 3.4l V8 and I'm used to 5+l, but the theories are the same. As for the ceramic-metallic coatings, I'd much rather do the manifolds over the y or preferably both together. The underhood temps on this car are freaky.:oogle:

For the MIL eliminator, I'm looking towards something that I can just plug or splice in. If I'm going to go to the trouble of programming the car I'd much rather do it on the dyno or track.

Though keep in mind, I am used to the bigger displacement motors.

Please keep being the VOD, it'll help shape the ideas to hopefully something we can all make/use. :thumb:

I absolutely agree on the higher stall Torque Convertor. It was by far the BEST mod I did on my Z28. You skip the doggy lower rpms and get right to the meaty part of the power band. It also makes driving so much more enjoyable. It's like always being in the right gear. A high stall TC is for MUCH more than just quick launches. It makes the whole driving experience better.

Although, there has never been enough interest from the 3rd gen SHO crowd for anyone to offer one. I'm sure a stock 3rd gen with a high stall TC would blow away a stock GenI/2.

As far as the higher stall, as I said, I'm assuming the same would hold true for the SHO as for the F/Y body and fox/sn95 cars. I know a few people that do converters, but I really don't feel like digging in there yet.

As for the exhaust, most every dyno run I've ever done typically shows gains throughout for exhaust upgrades. Unless Yamaha/Ford got Trick Flow or AFR to design their exhaust ports on their heads, I'd assume the same holds true for the SHO. ****, if I ever come across a set of heads I know I'm going to flow them - port them - and then flow them again. I'm very curious about the heads on these cars.
