I did a few searches but, wanted to make sure I handle this right. Has anyone had the Anti-lock light on all the time. This was the way it was when I got it last week. Is there something wrong or is just the light on for some stupid reason?

Just want to make sure I don't have a serious problem or cause serious damage.

Thanks

Jeff

My light is on because i destroyed the sensors doing the 96 upgrade. I need to find some black tape for that...:) Seriously though, if the light isnt on your abs probably isnt working. Lots of cars dont have abs though, just keep that in mind until you get the problem fixed.

The light is on because the ABS computer failed self-test.

Most common reasons are an open wheel sensor or an open solenoid coil in the pump assembly.

As pointed out, if the ABS light is on, then the ABS system is OFFLINE. That means you will just have conventional hydraulic power brakes but will not have the ABS feature.

well it's not so bad. i don't like ABS much and if you think about it, it really rarely comes on. i replaced the wheel sensor in my 93 once, easy to do. but it was like $50 from ford. which is the drawback

Well, you could find an open stretch of road, build up some speed, and stand on the brakes. If the brakes lock up, you know the ABS is not working! :D

Find the sensors at the wheels and take a thin piece of paper or even sandpaper and just run it through the gap where the sensor is. You don't need to sand anything so don't go sanding it. Because the sensor is based on magnetism it will collect small metal particles from the road and your brakes and eventually it can cause a buildup which becomes a problem. Clear that out and see if that helps. If not then check the wiring to make sure they didn't get caught on something and snagged, then where it connects into the main harness to make sure the connections are tight and clean. You might consider giving each of the contacts a little squeeze of dielectric grease for good measure.

Easy fix

Mine did the same thing and personally i dont like abs so i did this simple fix. If you look behind the headlight on the drivers side right in front of the air box there will be this box looking thing plugged into this clip on the metal frame part in between the headlight and filter box(its the metal painted to match the car) The harness is plugged into it from the bottom and all you need to do is un plug it and light should turn off. The abs is pretty useless on these cars so this is a free way thats even easier than using the black tape in the gauge cluster. It takes the better part of 1 minute. The hardest part is opening the hood :) My email is [email protected] if you have any questions. Thanks, Karson

nevermind

dont answer my previous quesiton. I read the link you had and figured it out. Email me at [email protected] with the details of it. If i recall my buddy harrison went on one of these runs last year but i thought it was in dallas. Anyways my car is bone stock in the suspension area so it might not be smart for me to do that. Let me know what goes on if ya could. Thanks, Karson

Karson,
We meet 3 times a year and rotate around the state for fun/new scenery. The Dallas guys get together on their own a bit more often, but the Houston/San Antonio/others, come together 3 times yearly.

If you really want up to date details, join our Lone Star group on yahoo under
"fordbastards" yep...the cars that Ford forgot. We let the Tbirds and Probes join us too in order to keep the turnout up, or just keep track of the link above and the LSSHOC section here on shoforum.

Hope to see you there! My car is undergoing some changes as we SPEAK!

As far as your car being a stocker, just have to exercise caution and realize you can't possibly hold the corners like a seriously suspension modded SHO like some of us have. Just use your head and you will be fine.......

Best mod for the buck is TIRES!!!!!! :****:

Back on topic.....

Even though I jokingly suggested standing on the brakes to test them, I do not recommend disabling any feature as a "fix". Especially when it's something safety related, like your brakes.

I would first try Bizzy's suggestion of cleaning the sensors at your wheels, as this too is free and easy, and you just may end up fixing the problem rather than ignoring it.

None of us here want to see a SHOwner get banged up in a preventable crash.
