Lately, my antenna motor has been making weird noises. For the last three days, the antenna failed to retract inside its housing. It required me to tap the antenna at its base in order for the antenna to go down. The problem happens randomly, but the grinding noise on the antenna motor is still present. Is this a sign of a motor going bad? Perhaps time to replace the motor? Does anyone have a spare motor for the antenna? Thank you. (1995 SHO)

Pull off the passenger tire and the splash shield, and then unbolt the antenna motor from the car (don't forget to disconnect the wire harness).

Put it on a bench and you will be able to take the motor apart and look it over real good. Clean out the motor / housing (brake cleaner and compressed air works good), remove any broken pieces of the mast that you might find, and re-**** the motor gears with silicone grease. Clean the wire connector pins, too. Then put it back together and, before you re-install it on the car, test the motor by jumping battery voltage to it. If it works, your all set, re-install it. If it doesn't work, you know you need a new unit for sure.

BTW, if yours needs a new mast, you can pick one up at Pep Boys (Metra GM replacement mast for a Corvette fits - Part # CK-PWRGM301).

Rockledge,
Great advise! I will attempt to clean out the motor housing, etc. by next weekend. So far, the motor is still running, but I will never know when the motor is really going to die out on me. I hope that all it needs is a little bit of cleaning. Thanks.

Antenna motor - Update

After a number of weeks searching for the best alternative regarding my antenna situation, I came upon a website Bridegewood Motorsports that sells antenna masts for less. The site described several symptoms of the problem and I was able to narrow my problem down to an antenna mast malfunction. The motor is definitely still good and the owner of the business recommended to me that the mast is the real culprit.

An exact replacement for my mast was ordered with part # 44-PWRFD260 which is a 38 inch antenna mast that is 100% compatible for the Taurus models 92-95. It cost me only $19.95 including shipping and handling and installation was so easy. Now, my mast can run up and down with no problem...just like when my car was brandnew.

If you didn't remove the broken piece of plastic cable inside the antenna motor housing, your new antenna will be toast in no time. Don't ask me how I know... :(

On my 93 it was making weird noises also but then i was hit on the passenger front 1/4 panel and had to get a new fender anyways so i got a new antenna motor with the new 1/4 panel and it was working fine and then about 2 weeks after it was all fixed and stuff the darn thing quit working again. Anyways, i had the quarter panel off when i was messing around with mine so it wasnt soo bad, You shouldnt have a problem getting to it if you remove the inner fender wall by the tire. Good luck :thumb:

Shawn, not to steal this thread (I also am looking at a new antenna/mast) but where did you get your 1/4 panel?

Check out the website that I posted under "antenna motor-update." That website will tell you how to remove the old antenna and insert the new mast. Most of the time, the teeth of the plastic within the mast wears out in time. Just remember, before you remove your antenna mast...there is a small nut before you can pull out the old one. Use a 9/16 deep socket and remove that...then you are good to go. Good Luck.
