Long story: I am in the process of installing another engine in my car. While the engine is on the stand I decided to put a new timing belt on. I took the old belt off after lining up the timimg marks on the balancer and the cam pullies. I went in the house for a short while, came back and slid the new belt on and slid the balancer back on. I rotated the engine by hand one revolution and checked my timing marks. Top both lined up, bottom one was off 45 deg. Rotated again once more, top ones great, bottom one off.

I then asked my teenage bystander if he had "helped" me in any way. He informed me he rotated the crank to see how hard it was to turn. I turned the engine until the top marks lined up, took the belt off and the rotated the engine to #1 top dead center, and reinstalled the belt. Now all three stripes line up ( two on top line up with the dots on pulley which all line up with the lines on the tin behind, bottom stripe lines up with the dot on crank pulley). Is there any else I should do to make sure everything is back in sync? Are the valves now damaged because I rotated the engine with the cams out of sync with the engine?

Sorry this is so long

Once you rotate the engine, the marks on the belt will not line up with the marks on the pulleys. You are fine.

Even if you had the belt installed wrong or if it broke, you would still be fine. Put it back together and fire it up.

Thanks guys!
When my "helper" rotated the crank separate from the cams, I thought the pistons might have hit the valves!
Whew

you are stright

the valves dont hit the pistons even the belt snaps the engine is designed that way for that reason you are ok make sure the belt is not too tight you will get a slight squeek and a loud squeek at high rpm trust me i made that mistake
