I have the Gen I premium sound (not JBL) in my SHO, so I think the amp is different (or I have just 1 instead of 2). Right now I am using a standard Ford am/fm cassette head unit because I couldn't find a premium deck that worked.

Anyway, I have read that if I want to use a Gen II JBL system, I need to remove the divider bar between the DIN slots (or just probably get a trim piece from a GEN II). I also need to get a Gen II JBL amp because of the voltage difference.

My question is...if I've never had JBL to begin with, how do I do this?

I think mine just has the silver amp and my old 93 had a silver one and a black one.

Obviously I'm bored today, so I'm going to run back out to the junkyard to see what they have. I've done some reading on this topic and it looks like I have the 1 black amp ONLY. I think the silver amp powers the sub for the JBL maybe? Since I just have the premium deck, I can probably get the Gen II head unit, Gen II BLACK amp, the CD player and the slave cable right?

I'll have my BlackBerry with me and will be checking for responses. I may not buy anything yet until I find out what I need.

The gen 2 JBL system is 2 single din units. One is the radio/tape player, and the other is the cd player. As far as i have seen they both fit in the same trim rings.

As far as the amp goes, the gen one uses a 12v remote wire for the amp, and iirc the gen two uses a 6v. If you want you can just run your remote wire off of a keyed 12v source to turn on the amps. I did this in my gen one for quite a while.

My brother went back and pulled the black amp from an Explorer; I think it was a 95. I may swap mine out in the 90 with that one then plug in my premium deck and see if it works; if so, I may decide to get a slave CD player for it. The only thing is that my interior lights won't match up. My premium deck is from my old SHO so it has the blue display; so does the slave CD player. I think it's a PITA to change out all of the lighting in the rest of the dash to make it blue.

Ok, I swapped out the amp with a Gen II amp (from a 95 Exploder limited). It plugged right in, but there is an extra plug that goes to that separate amp for the sub, which I don't have. Does it need to plug into anything if I DON'T have the sub? I plugged the Gen II head unit in, and it powered on. All I got was popping through the speakers.

Can anyone help me out?

Do you have the plug in the back?? If you dont have the cd player you have to have the jumper plug to go where the cd player would plug in. Otherwise you wouldnt get sound.

So I can either buy a CD player (which I want to do anyway) or get a special plug to make it work if I don't have one? I guess I'll hunt for a CD player. I have the power plug in, the premium plug (square), and the antenna plugged in the back.
