There may be a thread open about this already somewhere, anyhow, i love the heated oil discussions!

I used the Pennzoil Ultra 5w-20 after 2500 miles. I also use the K&N Oil filter.

However, my engine did have some issues..... (non oil related)....

Mobil 1, Pennzoil Ultra, Gulf Oil Spill Oil,Royal Purple, Amsoil IMO come down to what you have used in the past or just what brand you prefer.

I use Mobil 1 w/ a k&n filter. Just can't seem to get into Amsoil because of the way it's sold. Not a big fan of pyramid programs!

Hey, everyone has to change their oil for the first time. Buy 6 qts. Supposed to be 5 1/2 qts with a filter change. It's always a little less than that for me.

I like Royal Purple too. It's about a dollar more a quart though. Since I change my oil every 3000 miles anyway, Mobil 1 is just fine. Pretty sure I'll never have an oil related failure!

I will never put Royal Purple in another vehicle I own. I bought four cases for my two trucks and my SHO, and my wife's Explorer a couple years back. After putting it in my own trucks and car, three of them began leaking oil. They had NEVER leaked before then either. I rebuilt my own motor in my '97 F-150, my newly built freshened Lightning motor with only 2000 miles on it and my '92 SHO leaked small amounts. I never put it in the Explorer but I have since gone back to Mobil 1 for all my vehicles. Everyone said how good RP was so I tried it. Then, after I bought it, there seems to be alot of other folks with the same problem I find out. Interesting enough, my old F-150 and the Lightning didn't leak after I changed it back. IMO, steer clear of Royal Purple. Just my .02

I ran Amsoil in my '95 MTX from about 10K-36K miles, Mobil1 the rest of the time. My brother took the mill to a machine shop to get it cleaned up last year, and at 160K miles, they said the cylinder walls looked like they were new, so I'd say they both get the job done very well.

We have a local retailer that sells Amsoil, but I can't justify $15/quart for Amsoil when I can get Mobil1 for around a third of the price...

Just a note - AMSOIL recommends 0w20 for the 2010 SHO.

Also, here's a link to some recent basic oil filter testing for those not in the know and looking for answers in my thread on our forums.

http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilters/reference.html

It is very helpfull.

Why would someone go with 0w20 when Ford recommends 5w20 and now in 2011 they recommend 5w30. I didn't know amsoil had a hand in desiging the SHO motor.

I never got how people would use a different vicosity than what the dealer recommends.:munch:

We have a 95 F150 with the 4.9L I-6 for our shop truck. BOught it in 1998 with 22K on it. Truck gets the **** beaten out of it, oil changes every 5000 miles with whatever oil is on sale. Usually Oreillys house brand 10W30.

About a year ago, with 238,000 miles on it, it started running rough. Noticed that 3 of the cylinders had lower compression than the other 3. Pulled it off and found that the heads had cracks along the exhaust valve seal area on each of the low compression cylinders.

I asked about doing a complete overhaul, since the truck had almost 240K on it.

The tech that pulled the head also said that the cylinder walls still looked brand new, had the hatch marks in the walls still. And recommended that we "slap a rebuilt head on" and keep running it. Truck has 252K on it and runs great still, and unfortunately, has outlasted the 2004 F250 with the 6.0L Diesel in it.

Go figure.
