You'll also have to remove the accessory belt. Do you have an Allen wrench for the tensioner? There is a bolt on the bottom of the alternator that you have to access from the driver side and it takes a U-joint to really turn it with a socket wrench.

Where did you get your replacement and if you don't mind saying, how much did you have to pay for it. I am still on my original alternator and original brushes (251,500 miles). I removed it to try to replace the brushes, but the three different sets I had purchased for the job did not fit. I burnished the existing brushes and cleaned them with my R/C motor cleaner. Has anyone replaced only the brushes on a Gen I SHO's alternator?

I have the tools. I think its the voltage regulator not the alternator but I had to buy the hole thing. I paid 170 plus 75 core.

The voltage regulator is inside the alternator. I replaced my alternator 4 times in a matter of 100 days. Each one was remanufactured and according to some parts guys it's a crap shoot. You get some that last and some that don't. The only positive is that if it's bad, it'll usually go out quickly. Make sure you get the right one! An ATX has a 120amp and the MTX has a 130amp. However, the 89-93 MTX's had 90amp alternators. They are not interchangeable. Good luck.

I can do a complete R&R job on an alternator in 34 minutes.

EDIT-
Ok try again something weird happened there. Just wanted to say Cincy SHO stocks 130 and 150 Special Service Alts for the SHO. The 150's can even get powdercoated in black, red or white for 10 bucks. 210+15 S&H+ 10 COLOR, so 235 isn't bad for a new alt that looks pretty under the hood.
