Hi there-- I'm in the middle of replacing my quickly failing alternator and I've hit a brick wall in the process of getting the damn thing off. On bolt sepatates me from success. The bolt in question is the bolt on the back (non-pulley) side of the alternator. It's just a pain in the ass to get to! If anyone has any tips on how to get to it, they'd be much appreciated. thumbs_u

I just replaced my alternator last weekend.I used a swivel socket and 2 extensions to get it out. It is a tight fit.

It's a ******. The best thing I've seen for this is a stubby wrench with a closed ratcheting end. Maybe Sears sells them individually.

Take off the intake support and use an openend wrench. You may have to flip it around afew times till ya can get it with your fingers.

thanks for the info, people thumbs_u , I got the old one off and the new one on without too much trouble--i found taking off the coolant bottle and moving it out of the way was a real help. However, my battery light still blips on every now and then, usually under accelleration at low RPMs...even after I just replaced the alternator and battery. Is this something that'll work itself out after a little driving? , or should I take that shiny new alternator they gave me and throw in in their faces? I suppose checking all of the connections and such will be a good idea. Anyone had any experience with this?

That is not a condition that will work itself out. That is an indication that something is still amiss in your charging system. Check the electrical connections at the starter end of the battery cables. If the battery light is coming on differently than before the new alternator, there is a chance you could have a bum unit.

Yeah, instead of coming on every time I hit the gas, now the battery light just blips on and is gone just as fast. I'll poke around under the hood and make sure everything is tight and clean. If everything looks the way it should, I'll let you all know how the parts department reacts to a 20 lb. alternator heaved at them in a fit of rage shoot
