In three of my four, I have had the battery light either go on intermittently or stay on. The intermittent version could be made to turn off usually if you revved the engine a couple times, and then on Bob, it wouldn't go off and eventually the battery didn't have enough charge to start the car. I took the ATX alt that was intermittent to Oreilly alt tester and it said the diodes were bad, after Fred told me that they were probably bad....so I ordered some online, replaced them, and now it tests good. I am going to use that one in Babe as soon as my bleeping!! toe heals. The replacement I recently bought started showing the intermittent alt light problem about a week after I put it in.
On Bob..MTX 95, I replaced it with one from a forum sale and it is doing fine. I took apart the one that was on it when I bought the car and the two solder joints coming out from the commuter? were touching but broken and one of the the 6 lines soldered to the rectifier bridge was not soldered, just touching.Like someone rebuilt it once and just did a crappy job,,,,anyway, I re-soldered all those places, cleaned the copper ( one of the brushes in the voltage regulator isn't long for this world) and now it is testing good and putting out about 15.4 volts. So...I'm sure people know this, but I am impressed that you can easily save yourself a lot of bucks, and have an interesting time repairing your own alternator. Same thing with those window motors, they just need cleaning. Even after 20 years the brushes and the motor components are "all good"http://shoforum.com/images/smilies/woohoo.gif
