Hey all,

Lately I have been noticing a slight grinding noise coming from what appears to be the alternator area. It doesn't do it all the time. Today when I started it to go to lunch it sounded like a slight intermittent knock. Its definetely coming from the alternator area. I'm fairly sure its not a rod knock. Do the bearings go bad in the alternator and if they do would they cause this grinding and knocking noise? I notice it at idle, but not when accelerating. Not sure if the alternator was replaced. No codes or idiot lights coming on. Its a 95 MTX with 144,000mi on the clock.

Yes the bearings do go bad in them. Take a long stethoscope or if you don't have one a long screw driver place it on the Alt Housing then put the other end against your ear. You should be able to pin point the noise this way.

When my Alternator bearings went bad they made an intermitent very high pitched squealing sound, especially when accelerating.

Two days and the Alt was toast.
