Alright, my Altenator is probably about as old, if not, as old as the car. I have a 1993 MTX. And I just recently put in the system to die for (trust me, when I paid for it, I died) and I have a nearly brand new Optima Yellow Top battery. I have a P4004 Rockford Amp and I have 2 Subs running through, I also have my 6X9 Pioneer speakers in back and my 6.5 Infinity speakers up front w/ components.

I have a Rockford 1 Fared Cap. just not installed yet. One day I couldn't start my car at all, after I pulled the fuse to the amp, I haven't had problems. I don't think the Cap. is going to help, just because it's mainly for peak power. So I'm looking into a new altenator, just because I think mine may be getting weak.

So basically, whats the biggest bang for the buck. I want something good, I'm willing to pay for it... within reason. Any advice would be appreciated.

As alternators age they will put out less current at low rpms. Most alternators are rated at ~1500 rpms. I would just get a regular replacement and make sure the battery is charged. Don't count on charging the battery with the alternator.

I would get the alternator tested first at an auto parts store for free first. This just ensures you lack of DC current.

If it is low, then I would suggest just factory replacement with a warranty. If you have a cap, I would think the alternator could handle what your running without a problem.

Cold, plus old, and large draw of current from system = lots of strain.

Thanks... my friend is probably going to install the cap, sometime within the week. I talked to a few other people, and they said since I almost went a whole week with no problems, that a cap would probably just help out the most.

And my dad just told me that at one point, we had the alternator rebuilt. Good to know...

Caps aren't anything but band-aids and make no power. If you didn't have enough power before then you still won't have enough. They are actually a drain on a marginally charging system.

tha cap does draw current but it makes it so it can store power so the amp doesnot use as much from the car when the bass hits hard

I was looking at Autozone.com and they have a Duralast 90 AMP alternator for 139.99, and a core charge of $70...

Think this one will do the trick?

A cap indeed will draw current to charge itself. When it gets discharged then it will add load to recharge.
