I am going to put in my gauges tommorrow ( watertemp and a/f) my question is this I have a spair new o2 sensos the 4 wire i believe could I just have a **** shop weld a bung on my exhuast and use its reading or do i have to connect to one of the stock O2 and were is the best place to connect if i use stock O2 and if I use my xtra o2 were should I have them welded in by the way did any body know the autometer gage pod for the 94-98 mustang also fits the 2nd gen sho you just have to push it on a little harder. thanx thumbs_u

Why not just use one of those 3M electrical wire tap connectors that you can get at walmart for about a buck and tap into the line on the wiring harness just above where the O2 sensor connects to the harness?

An extra bung just for the gauge itself is always more accurate.

The reason i wanted to use a seprate O2 sensor was I figured it was more accurate and that way it wouldnt iterfear with the signal going to the computer i read someone getting a code on the O2 he had it hooked up to and I mean I aint going to use the thing i mean the extra sensor and if i am not mistaken O2 sensors produce voltage so it should be relatively simple has any done this? please help  thumbs_u

I have one on the way and was just going to wire it into the wiring harness for the computer since you won't be affected by the o2 voltage that way. Is this correct? Someone put me in my place if I am wrong, since I haven't done this before myself.

I read some one here hooked theres up with a switch to go back and forth between o2 sensors(stock) and if he left on one bank it would give him a lean code on that O2 please feel free to correct me if im wrong I know people have done this both ways I just figured since i got that extra O2 sensor it would be better in some way and how would I connect it if I used that extra O2 it is one of those 4 wire heated types im pretty sure I only need one wire right? beer I probly wont do it today any more I think I sprained my ankle you guys should see how swollen this thing is eek!

It all depends on the resistance of the gauge. If the gauge circuit has a really high resistance then tapping into the O2 sensor wiring harness won't cause a voltage drop. If not then a seperate O2 sensor would be better. Just do what everyone who has been there done that with the particular gauge you are using. You can always call the gauge manufacturer to see what they recommend.

O2 sensors do not put out an analog signal,,that is, one whose voltage changes with the gas concentration. O2 sensors put out a digital signal, its either on or off, depends if there is oxygen present or not. It can switch back and forth quite rapidly. an analog meter can attempt to read an average but it won't be very accurate.

Im not one to second guess but I always thought O2 sensors give very small signals like less than 1 volt depending on oxygen content but ive been wrong before any one else got an idea, so can i use my extra O2 sensor or just tap in in to existing sensor which is best which is easiest what would you guys do. Im on pain killers right know so my screen saver is trippin me out eek! thumbs_u

You are correct sholover. There is a variable voltage in the signal wire, that is very precise. That's what lets the computer do the fuel metering at 1000's of time a second.

I have a switch, and besides having a loose connection so I can't read the front bank (oops!) it works fine. Also, when it's going, don't be alarmed seeing it dip from lean to stoich to rich all the time. It's just the computer doing its job.

Sho91mtx would you mind telling what and how you did yours I would really appreciate the help. do you know if having the meter hooked up alters what the computer sees hence me wanting to use the extra sensor thanks in advance. thumbs_u oh oh the pain killers are waring off get me a beer wink beer all better

An oxogen sensor produces a variable voltage signal ranging from .01 to .9 volts. The more voltage present means there is less oxogen present (or the system is running rich). In a normal running engine the signal will bounce from rich to lean quickly as the PCM compensates for the signal it just recived.
