It seems to be a bad lower radiator hose. After 15 minutes of idling or so, I noticed a pretty steady runoff from the area where the lower hose meets the radiator on the passenger side. How hard is it to fix? Do I need to drop the spash guard to get at it? Need some tips, cuz the coolant smell is getting annoying!!

Jeremy,

It is much easier to access the hose clamp at the water pump end with the splash shield removed. Be ready for ALL of the coolant to drain when the hose is removed. That is why a leak in this hose is critical - you can lose all of the coolant with a catastrophic failure (split).

Your buddy,
Scott

Scotty, is Adam there yet?? Did you get my care package? I might try and to this myself, cuz the car may not be able to wait to have you do it. You could probably walk me through it, yes??

Jeremy,

I spoke with Adam on his dad's cell phone at a gas stop in Emporia(?) Kansas. They expect to roll in to Dallas around midnight. Mike D. called and sadly informed me that he didn't have enough lead time to finish the intake and valve covers for Adam. We should get started on the engine disassembly around noon-ish tomorrow.

I had sent you an email about our receipt of your care package. Thank you very much. I will use the valve gapping feeler gauge on Adam's car. Gotta go.

Hi,

I'm just doing the same job on mine too. I thought it was the lower radiator hose leaking too. That awful coolant smell dripping on the exhaust telling you something is wrong!!

Mine ended up being the water pump leaking out of the "weep hole", the seal had worn out. It was leaking down and dripping off the sump. Just check that to make sure it is only the hose.

And yes, removing the splash guard and front wheel makes the lower hose SO accesible. It stares you in the face!

After breaking one of the retainer clips on the guard......all you do is pull the center plastic pin out and then the main retainer pulls straight off. You should only need to remover the lower 3 or 4 then fold the guard up so you can see the motor.

Well, I doubt that my water pump is leaking because it is less than a few months old from when SDPATT put it in! I am still going to go with the Lower Radiator leak, and I have already ordered the part from fordpartsnetwork.com. I await them for repair. THanks for the tips!!
