Recently put on the a/c bypass belt from Autozone, the gator brand. However, there is a loud winding noise coming from the back pulleys area. I've been running this belt for about 3 weeks now, and there hasn't been any other problem but this.

Is the belt too tight? It doesn't seem so.

I'm sure it's routed properly.

I sprayed some belt grease on it and it did nothing for the noise.

The winding sound is much more pronounced at initial start up, but after driving for about 10-15 minutes, the noise isn't so loud or noticeable.

What da dilly????

Um, no, not yet! Don't know what or how to check this bearing. This the idler make this type of noise when it's going bad? The sound I described only started after I put on the shorter a/c bypass belt. Should I just go back to the original size belt? Well, I guess for starters, I can put an original size belt back on and see if the sound goes away. Then go from there......

I would be curious what the fix for this is. My SHO is fine but
my every day driver is a `99 Ranger XLT 4x4. I have replaced the idler and tensioner pullies and replaced the serpentine belt twice. One grooved and one gator style. It still chirps like a field full of crickets.
Seems to be the worse after or during rain or wet snow. Have sprayed every known dressing or lubricant on belt to no avail. Quiets right down initially but the next day it's right back to chirping.
I now suspect the bearings in the AC compressor. It's really the only thing left that I can think of.

Yeah, but I have a a/c bypass acc. belt on already so it doesn't even touch that pulley. The noise is coming from the back area closest to the firewall. Actually, to be exact, the noise started some time after I sprayed some belt lub on there. I check it out more this weekend.

take a look at the power stearing pump, like you i too have a 93 atx
and mine took a crap in REAL short order, the pully appaernatly was sub quality when ford made the 93's (or thats what i have been told, i honestly dont know) and the pullys are prone to come loose.
(but in my case the damn pump might be shot as well due to the fact that it looks like no one changed the fluid in it since it was made :p )
or it might just be air in the lines for the powerstearing as well (unlikely but possible)

A good way to pinpoint a noise....(don't laugh).

Get a funnel and a piece of hose that fits the end. With the funnel to your ear, move the end of the hose around the area, expecially near the pulley centers (bearings). You should be able to hear quite clearly where the noise is coming from.

This is characteristic of the goodyear gatorback belts. I've been running them for a little under 60,000 miles and mine still make the whine. I actually like the sound. Don't worry about it. As long as your belt tension is ok the sound is not harmful, lol.

I have had a gatorback belt on my SHO for 4 years and 40k miles, it has always had a whine to it. Doesn't sound too bad if you ask me..

So, I guess everyone agrees that I was going 200mph in my 93Atx, eh?! :laugh_ti: :bonk:

The whine noise I'm getting is not a good sound to me, and prolly is different from the whine noise others have. It comes and goes, sometimes louder than at other times, but generally heard mainly at start up and 20 minutes or less of driving. I'll do the funnel thing also, if all else fails.

I just assumed that somebody in an MTX was pushing you from behind :dig:

This is probably a wasted post, but since nobody has suggested it yet, are you sure the belts arnt too loose? When you start the car in the cold weather, all the metal pullys (pullies?) are contracted, and after about 20min of driving, the whole engine heats up and they expand back out, effectivly tightening the belt. Worth a shot, at least
