Absolute crap.

I bought the first one from Summit Racing back in Feb of this year, and well... it didn't last very long. I got about 3 weeks out of it before it starting having issues with misfiring. Then one day it became completely useless.

Frustrated with this, I sent Summit Racing an e-mail outlining my dismay:

Hello,

I am writing in regards to order number XXXXXXX, which was for an Accel
Super Coil for a 1992 Ford Taurus SHO.

I need an RMA.

You see, while it's comforting knowing that this pretty yellow box, replete
with coil pack inside, has served at a great door stop, or paper weight for
the past 2 weeks, it would be even more comforting to know that the $100 I
spent on this were doing what I had intended it to do, which was to bring me
much enjoyment from idle to 7300 RPM. Instead, my enjoyment now only
happens from about 1800 RPM until about 6200 RPM. Anything outside of that
RPM range, and this thing was misfiring like Dick Cheney on a deer trail.
Consequently, this greatly diminished my enjoyment. The stares from
pedestrians and other motorists as my car sputtered and backfired every time
I pulled away from a light or a stop sign weren't helping matters, either.

I don't even want to discuss the "friendly competitions", and the ensuing
embarrassment when this problem first presented itself.

While I'm currently running on my stock coil again (boy am I glad I didn't
get around to eBaying that thing!), if I could have a working Accel Super
Coil, well, that would be swell.

Let me know if you can help me with this.

Best regards,

Hamal Terry

They sent me a new one.

So, I installed it last night, and this morning jumped in the car and headed up to Boston for work. I figured it'd be a nice shakedown drive for all the recent work I've done to the car, to make sure things are ***** dory. The drive up was fantastic. and the few times I got on it, she pulled harder than a Hunts Point h...

It pulled hard. It was good stuff, and I figured, well, maybe it was a fluke.

So, I worked for a few hours, and jumped in the car to head home. Left around 3:30pm or so. I got on the Mass Pike, edged into the gas in 4th gear, and it happened...

...a ******' stumble. The sonovabitch stumbled. :madflame: The same damn stumble that started the first time.

To make a long story short, the stumble continued to get worse. Any low RPM, high load condition, and "stumble". Edge into the gas in 5th gear at 65MPH to take an incline... stumble. Idling in 1st gear, and traffic begins to roll... "stumble". Goose the throttle off idle... *stumble*pop*stumble*. By the time I got back to Queens, it was doing the same backfiring and stumbling BS that the first one did when it failed. The only thing it isn't doing (yet)is misfiring at high RPM's during WOT.

I'm currently writing a nice letter to Summit to try and get a refund, and more colorful letter to Accel (Mr. Gasket) to express my opinion about their <sarcasm>engineering prowess and mastery of quality control.</sarcasm>

Then I'm reinstalling my stock coil. Again.

I have herd horrible things about those super coils, everyone has had problems with them, you are not the only one. Get a nice new stocker and be done with it. What could you possibly gain by 15% more spark? I suppose a nice tow bill is the answer.

I have heard bad things about the Accel coil too, but I have not had any problems.
I got one to replace my 170K stock unit, and my car ran much better (probably because the old OEM one was on it's last leg). Ran great for 6 months until my car was destroyed.
Ran better than a new stock one? Can't say for sure, but ran better than an old stock one.

Have one on my S/C car, and now problems yet.

Maybe quality control is crap on these units, and it's just luck of the draw if you get a good one?

Well I'll tell you what, if Hamal sends it up to me I'll give that coil a try - though I'm inclined to believe it's...

I am an Accel fan, just not for the SHO. I have had accel shorty plugs, distributor, and coil on my 67 Impala for over a decade. Never 1 problem.

I do believe that for the SHO, stock motorcraft parts are best. Both of my 91's are running on there origional coils and DIS's.

I still hang around with the V6 Mustang community a bit, they have also had a very high failure rate with these coils.....and the sad thing is, usually some kid bought the hype and put it on in place of a perfectly good OE coil, thinking it will make his stock car fast. Meanwhile, there are guys putting down 400+ hp on the stocker, with rarely a complaint.
