If the ABS brake system is not functioning the brakes function as non ABS brakes. So, what do you mean by "bypass" the ABS system.

You can eliminate the ABS by gettiing a non ABS master cylinder, say from an 89 SHO or a non ABS SLO or Sable, and the non ABS proportioning valve, and the matching brake lines.

Look at a non ABS 89, or the appropriate service manual, and determine what if anything else you might need to convert to a non ABS SHO.

You could just pull the fuse for the ABS, or disconnect the pump and/or Control Unit. Then the ABS would not function, and the brakes would work as non ABS brakes, assuming there is no hydrolic malfunction in the ABS.

Why would you want to do that? ABS has been in use on aircraft for over 50 years, and is a proven system. It gives you better control and shorter braking distances in hard stops or slippery conditions. rangerj

That might be the case with rain, but on ice its different situation. When you go to brake you don't have any b/c the wheels have little or no traction. The conditions fool the ABS into thinking that there is no ability to brake. That's not always the case. Its misleading to those who don't realize what's going on. If you don't know your braking capacity, you don't know what speed you can reasonably go. Personally, I like to have fully functioning brakes all the time no matter what the conditions. ABS is for those who need a computer/mechanism to help them drive their vehicles.

You don't need ABS to drive your vehicle. Its there for an extra safety precaution. Most newer cars all come with ABS. I can't recall any new cars that do not have ABS as a standard feature.

Once you're on ice, there isn't much you can do, but steer the vehicle, once you don't have control. Whether you have an SUV or AWD.
