I am in the process of getting a sale together on my Gen2 ATX, I have an opportunity to buy a Gen3 at a really decent price. My question is though, how good are the tranmissions on these cars. I know most Gen2 ATX cars only last about 100k if your lucky. So whats the usual length that one of these will last?

Keep in mind the tranny will probably last longer than the engine depending how you drive. However, I dont think the life expectancy of the gen3 sho trannies is an improvement over the gen2 sho's.

The tranny will last longer than the engines? What have you been reading?!?

With welded cams there's no question the V8 engine is good for over 200k miles. It's built to very tight tolerances and there haven't been any problems (besides the cams).

There are many V6's approaching or exceeding 300k miles, with no rebuilds. The one flaw with the V6 is the wear on the rod bearings, which should now be considered a maintenance item.

Neither car has a good tranny. The AX4N in the Gen3 seems to have problems with the torque convertor, especially. Most people require rebuilds in the 80-120k mile range. The AXOD in the SHO is similar. I rebuilt mine at 123k miles to the tune of $1700 (including shift kit).

Later!

I wasn't sure if he knew about the engine problems, it was a lame attempt to get him to ask why.
:p

PS If you drive like a granny with no weld or pinns, the trans can last longer wink

If the tranny doesn't go the torque converter will probably. If you get 100k out of either you are a lucky person. At any rate be sure to beef up the TC when the tranny is out and vise versa.
