I just put a new head on my girlfriend's '96 ****** 1.9L LX. And I put everything on right from the gasket to the timing belt, and did the timing belt twice to make sure I did it right but it won't start. Give me something that I probably missed, it will turn but won't start...help me please? headbang

Check for Spark, fuel pressure, and airflow.

One of them is missing or incorrectly timed.

I've replaced head gaskets and timing belts on the 95 and 93 1.9s. There is a specific procedure that was needed to align the crank and cam gears to make sure the cam was properly timed. Makes sure that you did follow that procedure. I gave that book away when the last of our Escorts got retired this spring, so I cannot look it up.

Well I aligned the cam up with the dot on the head with the small arrow on the cam itself and I aligned the little stem on the crank with the line on the oil pan and I aligned the white line on the belt with "o" looking mark which is 180 degrees from the stem with the white line on the belt with the letters that read upside down if looking down on the belt. So if it's spark what could I check for to correct that and the airflow? shrug

Check for spark. Put a screwdriver in a spark plug wire, hold it about a half inch from a ground source, and have a friend crank the battery. If you have good spark, make sure there are no obstructions in the air path. If no obstructions are found, make sure you are getting fuel. Disconnect a fuel line and check to see if fuel comes out when you turn the key on. If so, check for compression. When replacing a timing belt on most vehicles, you have to back the timing belt off from the tensioner, then torque it down until it lines up or some weird shit like that. It's explained in any chiltons or helms manual. I'm sure that's your problem. Are you sure you the pistons didn't slap the valves? You should have about 130 psi of compression for each cylinder. Good luck!

Just to add to "check the spark", make sure you have the correct wires going to the correct cylinders.
