The past few of days, I've been asking a few DSM questions about my friends car, a 99 Eclipse GSX. The reason is that he recently took his car to a DSM "specialist" called TurboTrix in Edison, NJ to get a Spec clutch installed. He initially wanted to go to his regular mechanic to get the work done, but felt that his car would get the attention that it deserves at TurboTrix more than it would at a local shop, since they specialize in the DSM field. His car went in as a mint '99 with 39,000 miles on the clock, with not one problem with it, save for a slipping clutch. I can attest to this; I drove it several times prior to it being serviced, and several times after.

It didn't come back out that way.

The whole story is outlined by him here:

I replaced the O2 sensor, and the car still has some funky idle issues, and there's a resonant noise at around 3100RPM's that wasn't there before. For those that read his post, the BISS screw is the Base Idle Set Screw. It's similar to our idle screw, in so much that you adjust it as an absolute last resort. You don't crank at it like it's a damn lug nut or something. :shakehead

And then there was the BS line that Mark (one of the owners, the infamous "tuning specialist" and his one-off closed loop theory) threw at us, about how "they're not associated with the Brad Benson Mitsubishi, they hate us, why would they have our backs?". <sarcasm>Needless to say, you could imagine my surprise when I read about how TurboTrix has just teamed up with Brad Benson Mitsubishi for performance upgrades.</sarcasm>

In all, the feeling I got from this guy and his operation is akin to the feeling I get from any scam artist... he's full of shit. And because of that, I'm now helping my friend diagnose and repair a car that was running flawlessly prior to going to these bunch of gorillas. In short:

If you have a DSM, or an Evo, or an STI, or any other car they claim to be a specialist with... don't bring it there. If you know someone else with any of those cars, tell them not to bring it there. Find somewhere else. There are tons of other DSM shops in the area with better quality workmanship, and infinitely better customer service.

That is all, thank you for your time.

In his post, he puts me as a mod at TCCA and SHOForum. I'm not a mod on SHOForum. Just to get that sorted out now before it's an issue later. I'll see if he can't edit that bit out...
