Hello again,

I'm not a mechanic and live in a small town. I had a problem with my 89'
sho not to long ago that nobody here could diagnose including dealers in neighboring towns and you all diagnosed the problem correctly right away.
So I thought I'd try again.

I've had my car about 16 years now. I got about 230,000 miles out of my first engine before it lost compression. The current engine has about 80K miles on it. I try to maintain the car.

In the last several months, I've had the experience of driving along and having the tack go to zero just for a moment and then bounce right back. A couple of times this has been preceded by a small power surge resulting in a quick lurch forward.

Recently, the tack drop has stayed down and the car has stalled a couple of times. Last week, the stall was preceded by the surge and I couldn't restart it. After trying for about a half hour, I had it towed in. It was in the evening, and the fellow didn't look at it until the next morning. It started right up for him. He kept it for 2 days and the problem did not occur for him.

I picked it up and while driving home, the tacked dropped out and bounced right back. Last night I drove it to get some gas, went in to pay, came out and it wouldn't start. I left it at the station, went back this morning and it started right up.

The Ford fuel pump is about a year old and I can hear it come on. The fuel filter, plugs, and plug wires are about the same or less in age and the plug wells are clean. The fuel tank has been replaced. The radiator and water pump are pretty young and the car is running cool. The spark distributor/coil (I think this is the right term) has never been replaced. The engine light is not coming on and the mechanic didn't mention any codes, but I forgot to press him on that.

Can anyone give me some guidance on how I might precede? Thank you.

I believe that your CPS (Crankshaft Position Sensor) is failing. CPS failure do not always throws a code.

it's your cam position sensor. front of engine near firewall. tight spot but not that hard to replace. change it and you should be good. of course, that's just my educated guess.

My Mom's 93 ATX's SHO would die once in a while. tach would read zero. I changed the Cam sensor. never died again. can't remember if I got a code though.
