A few questions about motor mounts

I will be aquired a 92 SHO very soon and it is in desperate need of motor mounts. Is it recommended to get the reinforced ones or are OEM ok. I get a good deal on OEM through work (Ford) so it would be considerbly cheaper for me or is it worth the extra $100 for reinforced ones from PP. Considering money is very tight right now until summer comes.

Also what is the typical labor rate to install them? I don't think is a job I really want to take on myself.

Well I would actually go with Ford mounts and get tq limiters. I havent busted mine and I know Tyler hasnt either. That would probaly be better.

I have a Ford rear mount, band new if you want it. I will sell it to you for less then Ford. I also have a ss front mount that might be busted doesnt look like it but it was acting like it was. I will sell it for cheap if you want to have it welded as the front one breaks first.

Here's what I have gathered in my experience. I have a 91+ with Ford Performance Specialist reinforced motor mounts. I have been pleased, as they have firmed up the shifter feel and can safely handle the power of the engine. Reinforced plates limit the ultimate deflection of the motor mount via a welded plate. The reinforced motor mount are, I think, a worthy upgrade to make, if nothing else to prevent future headaches by minimizing the posability of compponent failure. I don't remember what mine cost to install. Stop by a local shop and they can give you a close estimate. I would not recommed the solid SS torque limiters. I have read from people who have installed them on their SHOs that it is easy to break the mounts which the limiters attach to because of the added force transmitted by the solid link. Also, you are asking for noise/vibration/harshness when the reinforced motor mounts have already accomplished what you are trying to do with the torque limiters: contain the Yamaha beast. Unless you plan on racing a 3.6L supercharged SHO around Watkins Glen, the solid torque limiters are a waste of money. Go to shonut.com to read a good explanation about how reinforced motor mounts are made. Also look on SHOtimes.com for vendors who make reinforced mounts. Shop around. The research you do will be worth the money you save.

I have the SS torque limiters and stock mounts. The TQ limiters did basically eliminate engine movement. They cut down the bobble you get when you jump on/off the gas. If you install them solid without the stock rubber bushings at the top, the noise, at least on my car, was unbearable. When I used the stock rubber bushings on the top the NVH is at an acceptable level, but it does add a good bit of growl to the interior. I have 73,000 miles and my stock mounts are fine and I see no signs of the limiter brackets breaking.

I have stock subframe bushings and when I install the aluminum subframe bushings I am going to put on the reinforced motor mounts and take off the TQ limiters and put the stock shocks back on.

It was suggested to me by a well know mechanic to leave the TQ limiters off all together with reinforced motor mounts. Anybody have any opions on doing that?

The solid "torque limiters" are a bad engineering solution to the engine mounting situation. The brackets that these dampers attach to were not designed to handle the forces passed through the solid rods. Let the motor mounts do the job for which they were designed and keep the roll dampers for the job they were intended for.
