Gonna change a bunch of fluids on the SHO & refresh some stuff. Not doing plugs after all cause apparently it is a royal pain. But changing some fluids for the first time since I got it & could use some tips..

This will be the first oil change I do on the SHO. Anything I need to know? Or just business as usual?

Changing the Power Steering fluid too cause I am getting a whine sound from what I think is the PS pump. Any recommendations on fluid for this car? And again, anything I need to know or any tips?

Also gonna change the ATF as well, especially since its got 135k on it. I was planning on using RedLine ATF. Is there anything better for this trans? And again, any tips or things I need to know?

And is there any other fluids I should change too?

Thanks!!
Nick

You can use the same ATF for power steering as for your tranny. Don't forget to change the tranny filter while you're in there.

How about coolant? Done that yet?

I went through all of this for the first time this summer. Wasn't too bad. It can get messy if you don't plan ahead. Check out v8sho.com for all of the write-ups there.

I have used all the Lucas products for a few years and they work wonders. I put a bottle (1qt) of lucas oil stabilizer into my oil every time i change it and i can tell a difference in my mpg. It also reduces dry starts. the Lucas Transmission fix also prevents tranny wear. When you replace the fluid, add a bottle of it to the mix. It will help smoothen and firm the shifts as well as reduce foaming and overheating of the fluid.

I have heard good things about the Lucas products. With one exception. My old 97 Diamante. I put it in that trans, which was slipping slightly, and the trans went within about 5k miles... But who knows, maybe it was already that close to going....

I had a 92 GL that had a terrible problem shifting. I would slow down to a stop and begin to accelerate but the transmission would pop into neutral and before the rpms could lower, it would grind back into gear. Going around corners would pop it out of gear as well. I put in 2 bottles o transfix and new tranny fluid and i was able to drive that car another 15k before i sold it for 800 bucks. It had 135k on it when i sold it. Shifts never slipped again and i did not have a problem after i put new fluid in.

For the power steering fluid it use Type F ATF that is what ford saids to use, Tranny uses Mercon ATF fluid, and oil what ever you want but i would put a synthetic oil. Also if you need any help on how to chang any of the fluids just send me a pm and i will help you out or just repost what you need and someone on the forum will help you out.

Type F is not specified for the power steering system on the V8 SHO, Mercon/Dexron III is the appropriate fluid.

For ATF, regular Mercon fluid is used in '96-'97 trannys, and Mercon V is used in '98-'99 trannys.

Changing the Power Steering fluid too cause I am getting a whine sound from what I think is the PS pump.

That whine might be your belt tensioner. I had a really annoying whine and I thought it was my P/S pump but it ended up being that tensioner pulley which wasn't too bad to replace (better than the P/S pump). Just a suggestion...good luck.
