I've got a 93 MTX. The A/C doesn't blow cold. I was wanting to know if I have an R-134a system, an old freon system, etc.

I've seen the DIY kits at Autoparts Store, wanted to know what I need and if anyone has ever used the DIY kits? Do they work? Not worth the effort or money? Need to have it taken to a shop and done professionally?

It's getting pretty warm here in Florida to not have A/C.

:thankyou:

Unless it's been retrofitted, I think you have an R-12 system. According to SHOTimes, the switch to R-134a didn't occur until '94.

Can I get R-12 from the parts store and do it myself or do I need to take it a shop? Sorry for the all the questions. If I don't know, I'm gonna ask.

:thankyou:

You can probably track down some freeze 12 witch is compatible with r-12 systems. I think the fittings get changed when the retrofit is done???

Yes, go to a small shop and ask for some Freeze 12. It's the same cost as R-134a but you will need the shop to install it because they use the same installation tools as the R-12. Don't buy into the conversion kits that huge auto shops will try to sell you, it'll just cost you more money for the same thing and possibly less performance.

R-12 systems have threaded valves. R-134a systems do not. R-134a retrofitted systems have fittings threaded onto the threaded valves of a R-12 system to adapt to the installing tools of a R-134a system. I've also noticed R-12 systems have black lines versus aluminum color lines of an R-134a system.
