Usually the kit comes with a gauge that will tell you when you have the right amount in the system. If you knew for sure that it was converted to R-134, then you can get a can of it at Wal-Mart with a little adapter right on the can, shake it up, hook it up, push the button and let it all go into the car. Very simple way to charge the air conditioner. I have never had any problems with it. Save you time and money as long as there are no leaks and the compressor is good. I guess the only thing is you have to guess how much you need. It's similar to this, $12 at wal mart.

There should be a sticker on the bottle that says what type it is. Or maybe near the belt diagram ver the radiator. I think by law if it is onverted they have to put a sticker on there somewhere. But he may have done it himself who knows. The kits have everything you need and usually you can use the pressure gauge included in the kit to see how much is in it right now.

The conversion to R-134a also includes installing the adapter fittings over the old R-12 system's low and high pressure taps. The R-134a connectors simply will not attach to the R-12 fittings and vice-versa. The R-134a fittings are quick connect type fittings where the R-12 used screw on connectors.

With my R-134a converted 1991, the system works great with a static charge of 100 psig (without the engine running this can be measured at both the cold or high pressure fitting) at 85F ambient air temp and a cold (not run) engine compartment. I have seen as much as a 75F temperature drop between the outside and inside temperatures -33F vent temp on a 108F (indicated) day.
