The A/C isn't working, but it sounds like there is a chill in the air! Lets see if we can make things a bit more serene!
Thanks for the nice intro Rob.
First, what year are we talking about? If it is pre 94 has it been converted to R134a?
Serenity, do you remember the old joke about "look for the wet spot"? Well, if your A/C is low on refrigerant charge it has a leak. So, look for the wet, oily, black dirt at the A/C hose connections, behind the A/C clutch coil, on the front of the condenser (in front of the radiator), and at the evaporater core connections on the firewall.
You can jumper the low pressure switch to see if the clutch engages. If it does, then either the system is low on refrigerant charge, or the switch is bad.
If you jumper the low pressure switch connection with the Key On Engine Off (KOEO) the clutch coil should become a strong magnet. If it does not, then the coil is bad. If it does, you should see and/or hear the clutch "click" together. If the coil becomes a strong magnet, but the clutch plates do not engage, then the gap is too wide (generally).
The "gap" between the clutch plates should be about .035". If the gap gets too large then the compressor clutch does not want to engage. The gap gets wider with wear.
See the Utah SHO club article about diagnosing A/C electrical problems. It is outstanding. Rob, would you please post the site referrence?
Until we know what is working, and what is not, we cannot be much more help. Do some diagnostics and get back to us.
Lastly, Im going to stay away from the blond jokes. I'm afraid of what might get started! rangerj
