A/C is blowing thru defrost vents

My a/c just started doing this yesterday where it spontaneously started blowing thru the defroster vents. I have to continously mess with the buttons to get it to blow back to the vents. I've searched the site for anyone with an '89 sho with an eatc and I didn't find any with mu issues. Is there a way to test my model to see whats wrong?

Check your vacuum supply line to the EATC. Factory default is defrost when vacuum is lost.

the door that controls that is behind the glovebox on the left hand side. you will see the grey plastic arm connected to a diaphragm. these arms frequently break and/or the diaphragm's rip due to old age.

Would that be behind the eatc or hood and what color is the vacuum line? Is there a test I could do to check that vacuum line for a leak?

another thing that it does is swsitch back to vents randomly. i would have to mess with to go back to vents sometime also. so...what do y'all think?

Does it do this when you apply throttle when you're going down the road, or just completely randomly?

Just randomly. I first noticed when I was on a bumpy road and it switched to vents and the other when just driving regularly. I can mess around with the buttons and it'll switch to vents sometimes too.

It almost sounds like your EATC is on its way out.....

Ive seen it before on another sho, not mine personally.

Mine goes to defrost when you get on the throttle. Mine is apparently due to a vacuum leak at the firewall.

Before I get this eatc, I'd like to make sure that's it. Can '89 model eatc run test on ours, if not, what's a way of telling the difference a bad eatc and a bda given the symptoms I gave?

Turbo! You were right. That grey plastic arm was the culprit and it did break. Do you know of a way to fix it or anyone else on here know?

I've since fixed my issue but I was wondering if it can be replaced and how? Because i'm doing my heater core, again, and I wanted to take care of all that while i'm in there.
