Last year I recharged my A/C and it worked awesome the rest of the year. This year nothing so I thought I would put in another charge thinking that it leaked out. It would not take a charge even after i purged some out. Then I found that the compresser was not even engaging. Any help would be great. Thanks.

Sounds like clutch not engaging so I would first get a proper set of gauges to see what the charge measurement is. If it's full then try the broomstick test to see if it's just the clutch gap or if something is no longer operating properly. If the stuff is original, it's already at or past it's normal operating lifespan. I have to replace my compressor soon as it's leaking there and at the ac accumulator drier..

Ok I checked it with the proper gages and is correctly filled. Guessing that the compressor is at fault not too suprised it is 20 yrs. old. Ah what's the broomstick test? Thanks.

Turn the ac on and tap the compressor pulley with a broomstick or something similar to see if a nudge will get it to engage. If a light tap gets it going you may be able to remove a shim at the compressor clutch and limp along like that for the rest of the summer or so. Truthfully, if there is enough refrigerant in the system and it doesn't operate correctly at this age, it needs to be replaced.

There are heavier duty heat pump- all in one home hvac system- compressors down here that may or may not last 10-15yrs.

If it is kicking on, and your lines are cold, it is working and you have electrical issues like I do. Mine switched back to warm after I replaced my battery terminal ends 3 days ago.....I'm about to put it in storage until fall because of that. :(

It is also possible that either the CCRM relay for the a/c is not telling the compressor to kick on, or the high pressure switch is not giving the CCRM the correct data.

Unplug the connector at the compressor and see if you get battery voltage with the a/c on. If not, you have another issue. If you have power there, then it's in the compressor. If the broomstick method fails, it's time for a new one.
