a/c evaporator gone bad?

Has any member had any thing like this happen? I am restoring a 92 SHO with a few problems. The A/C was charged and leaked out the freon. Sound familiar?? Well I went back to the local repair shop and they recharged with a dye. After many hours of running the car and looking for the freon leak, the condesation from the evaporator was showing the dye in the water. So it was suggested to replace the evaporator. I know it is a PIA to remove the dash, I have done this a few times and I am considering changing the heater core as I get a coolant smell in the car. Perhaps one unit caused the other to fail. Has anyone had any experience with this type of problem? Any suggestions?

Probably no connection in the two failures other that they're both in a SHO.

Might as well bite the bullet and swap em both out.
