I was in traffic yesterday and my car started to overheat. I turned my a/c on , (that usually brings the temp down) I heard a couple of loud chirps and my car died. Turned the a/c off, started my car and drove home. My radiator fan was not turning on at all. When I got home I tried my a/c for a second and you could hear it locking/slowing up. I shut her down. My question= Do I need to replace the drier, hoses, oriface, the whole thing or can i change compressor and recharge?

If it was blowing cold at the very least the compressor and clutch. But as a precaution usually the drier and orifice get changed to prevent problems later.

If your radiator fan is not working the A/C pressure builds up and the high pressure switch will cut off the A/C. If your compressor is siezing then it should be replaced. Check the compresssor clutch pulley to be sure that the bearing is not seizing. Remove the belt and see if it spins freely.

Any time a compressor is replaced the filter/dryer should be replaced, as well as the oriface line. The rest of the system should be chemically cleaned out. You will find that the compressor will not be covered by warranty unless you do the above. rangerj
