Well, my A/C blows hot air... I bought the car a couple months ago, so I haven't had to use the A/C yet, but it isn't working. So my question is how do I check the clutch gap? How do I fix it if that seems to be the problem?

Is the compressor engaging? It's probably the blend door actuator motor. When this motor fails, it pushes the blend doors to full hot. This is a very very common problem on the SHO's. One of my 90's has a bad blend door motor. It's a pain in the ass to replace too. You have to pull the dash out or at least pull it back a good bit to get to the motor itself. Look on SHOtimes. There's a test you can do with the EATC to get it to show you a code which will tell you what's wrong. Good luck...

No, it doesn't. It stays in whatever postion it was in when it failed. You have the temperature blend mechanism confused with the airflow director. That door defaults air to the defrost when control is lost.

To repair the AC system, you have to diagnose what is wrong.

Is there refrigerant in it? Use guages to find out. That is your first step before looking at the clutch gap or anything else.

Jimmy,

You can look at the face of the A/C compressor clutch and see if it is being pulled into the pulley clutch surface.

If the clutch is not engageing you can try jumping the low pressure switch with a jumper wire. If this causes the clutch to engage, then you know that the low pressure switch is bad, or the system is low on refrigerant charge.

You can add a 12 ounce charge of refrigerant to see if this adds enough pressure to activate the low pressure switch and thus the clutch coil.

You can activate the A/C coil with battery voltage. It should become a powerful electromagnet, as that is how it draws in the clutch face.

Look for a black oily/greasy substance at all of the connections. This is the sign of an A/C leak.
This gives you a couple of ways to diagnose your problem without any special tools.

Once you know what is wrong get back to us and we'll try to tell you how to fix it. rangerj

I'll piggy back on to his thread a little, when my A/C compressor engages I can feel it while driving in pretty much every gear. THe car seems to bog a little them come back. Granted I'm still leaking refridgerant out the one hose I have yet to fix, but I wondered if the AC clutch might be out of whack. Or is it just cause I'm prolly low on R-134a?

Okay, so I ran a self-diagnosis, and after ~10 seconds, the display showed what is shows when you turn the car on (every choice lights up). What does this mean? Anything?

Net Viper,

You are not just losing refrigerant. The oil circulates with the refrigerant. When you lleak refrigerant you also leak oil.

If all you add to the system is more refrigerant, and no oil, you will end up with a siezed compressor someday!

When the compressor is engaged it puts a drag on the engine. it pulls about 5 HP. This is most likely what you are feeling.

If your system is low on oil you may be feeling a little more drag because of friction! rangerj

Jimmy,

Are you talking about the self-diagnostic system in the climate control system? Give us some more information.

Is your A/C clutch engaging? Can you hear a "click" when the A/C clutch surfaces slap together when the A/C is turned on? We need more info as to what the A/C components are doing.
