Hey all. So I had the R12 drained out of my system at a local auto shop a few weeks back and today my father and I converted the system to R134a and recharged the system.

After two cans of refrigerant the AC was pumping out 40 degrees cold, so everything seemed well. By the way, we had to correct a leak before we put any refrigerant in the system. Yesterday before putting any refrigerant in we hooked up a portable air tank to the high pressure line and noticed a small valve on the passenger side, in front of the valve cover and to the left of it. The valve was letting their air blow right out of it, and we believe it's referred to as the overpressurization valve. Well we knew it wasn't supposed to do that, so we ordered a new one from Advanced Auto Parts and picked it up and replaced the old one this morning.

We then hooked up a can of refrigerant and started the car up and turned the A/C on. So like I said, everything seemed fine at this point. An hour later I was testing out the A/C and had it in the DEFROST mode. Well after having it on for a few mins I pressed the OFF button now that I new the refrigerant hadn't already leaked out. Well when I pushed the OFF button the defrost came on full blast. I kept hitting the off button, turning the system off and on and the darn thing won't turn off.

Before I had any refrigerant in the system NOTHING came out of the registers when the unit was in the OFF mode. And now depending what temperature I leave the system on before I turn it of it blows air out at that temperature through the defrost registers. This isn't supposed to happen is it? I know the system is supposed to continuously defrost the windshield when in AUTOMATIC mode, but it shouldn't do anything at all when in the OFF mode, correct?

And now it also seems like the compressor is kicking on when I have the temp. set at like 70 degrees when it's already 55 degrees outside. Is it doing this because the system is detecting that there is actually refrigerant in the system now, or does this sound like a bad EATC? The thing has never acted up before, all though of course every button on the unit is cracked and broken. The DEFROST button doesn't seem to be stuck or anything either, and when I press the OFF button the screen displays that it IS in the "OFF" mode.

Thanks a bunch everyone!
