Hi there,

I'm posting for my husband as he is at work with my jeep because his SHO won't start. IT's a 96, about 65K on it. Has been running absolutly perfect until this morning. The engine turns over, but will not start. We will be getting gauge to read errors later today, but wanted to pick your brains. Thanks, Becky

Welcome, Becky!

There should be some 96-99 SHO owners around here who will be happy to help.

Might I suggest you also check out www.v8sho.com (if you haven't already) as that site focuses on your Gen III and you will probably find more enthusiasts to provide the information you need.

Generically, you will need to determine if the problem is spark or fuel delivery related. An easy check would be to see if the inertial fuel cutout switch has been tripped. Check your owner's manual for its location.

Unfortuanately, the re is not really a 'guage' to read the codes for your car. You would need what is called an OBD-II scanner or code reader. They can be purchased starting around $150 in auto parts stores. Also, it may or may not be useful, depending on whether your no-start condition is caused by something that would set a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) and turn on the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) / Check Engine Lamp (CEL).

BTW, where in Illinois?

Tell him to look in the trunk and check and see if the fuel shut off was knocked off.

I had this happen to my 99 once. In downtown Chicago.

Went over a bump and blam...10 seconds later she just dropped off..and wouldn't start. She'd turn over all day...just no spark.

Easy fix. Its never happened to me after that.

Just an idea.

If it is spinning over faster than normal it is flooded. The extra gas washes all the oil off of the cylinders walls and the mighty V8 loses compression.

You will need to disable the fuel pump and crank to get some oil back up there or wait it out if that is the problems.

This may sound like a really simple answer, but ... how much gas is in the car? I have run my '96 SHO out of gas no less than 5 times over the years. (You think I would have learned after the first time!) If my gas gauge reads anything less than 1/4 tank, I can't park uphill. And here in North East PA we have a lot of hills. If you're parked facing uphill, roll the car flat, turn the key, and fire it up.

Again this may sound too simple, but the first time it happened to me I had the car towed to my mechanic who started it right up. Boy did I feel stupid!
