Tom, Napa lists the brackets incorrectly however if you purchase the loaded calipers they will come with the correct brackets and new calipers and pads. After core, the loaded calipers end up being cheaper than the brackets... :)

Starting going through the same process for my 96 brake upgrade. Went to Autozone for all the parts. Asked for 99 SHO caliper brackets, rotors, and pads. Seems they list part# 619-104 for the caliper brackets. Which ARE NOT the correct caliper brackets. Looked up the brackets at Advance Auto Parts for a 95 Continental and they list BOTH 619-104 and 619-103... I wonder is the 619-103 is the right part number. Because the 619-104's are NOT tall enough to allow the larger rotors to fit under.

Edit: Just looked up the 619-103's on Autozone's website.. apparently those are the rears.

Just an FYI: When I ordered the loaded 96+ SHO calipers from Advanced Auto, I asked the counter guy about just getting the brackets and told him about the problems I was having finding the correct ones. He offered to order a set of 96+ brackets seperately along with the loaded calipers, with the understanding that if the brackets were the correct ones, then that's all I needed to buy. Otherwise, I could take the loaded calipers home if the brackets turned out to be the wrong ones.

Well, you guessed it. The brackets were the wrong ones. However, as I noted above, the loaded calipers were the correct ones with the correct brackets, so that's the way I ended up going.

I think Mikey describes the same type of thing in his post with respect to NAPA.

Tom also ordered the load calipers but received the wrong brackets. I wonder what the deal is. P4382 was the loaded caliper number he got the wrong brackets with. Which when I looked it up from Autozone was the same number they list for 96-99 SHO's.

Hello,

I'm getting ready to do the 96 brake upgrade for my 93. I'm just gathering parts now. I have a couple of questions.

It seems that the brackets are giving people the most trouble when working with auto part stores. Do all the replacement brackets come with Ford part # FN74 stamped on them? If that is correct, all I really need to look for is the stamp to tell whether or not they are the right ones. Right?

Are the knuckles the same thing as the hub/bearing assembly. Autozone had the hub/bearing assembies in stock but didn't know what the knuckles were. Are they the same animal or a different critter.

I have seen the splash shield on another parts list. Will my 93 work or do I need to hit the junk yard?

Lastly, which is an easier upgrade, the 96 caliper or Cobra caliper on the 11.6. This is a spirited daily driver. No intentions on taking her to the track.

Thanks in advance...

Chris

Yes the new 96 style brackets have the FN74 stamped on them.

They are completely different. The hub/bearing assembly is pressed INTO the knuckle. The knuckle is the major metal peice that connects everything in the wheel area together. Connects the tie rod end, ball joint, axle, etc.
So you will need new knuckles to perform the upgrade.

its probably easier to ask for the bracket for say a 01 or newer taurus/sable. it is the exact same FN74 bracket, and many parts stores come up with the wrong part when asked for a 96 SHO bracket.

FYI, I just ditched the splash sheilds without a problem.

No, they are not always. Even Ford ordered a set for me and one came with the FN74 and one came with the DN101 bracket, both of which would have fit a 96 SHO, grabbing the rotor at different spots, but still "fitting". Autozone did the same, as did NAPA and Checker and some other big chain. And for further note, the steering knuckle is the bearing hub.

Tom, forgot to mention this previously but the Porterfield 598 pads that I have are track pads, not street pads. :(

You can still use 'em if you want 'em, though...
