Dang those AutoZone guys. Even their online site says these calipers are for the SHO and SLO; the rotors are different between the two (according to AutoZone's online).

The caliper brackets that came with your setup are most likely not for the SHO...but for stock '96 SLO brakes.

I'm not so sure those are correct even if they are listed on their computer. If they are, are you sure you are lining the bracket up correctly? Meaning that you could try and line the holes up from either the front or rear of the holes in the knuckles which would of course change how much rotor width would fit.

FWIW I had replaced my '97's caliper brackets with the Dorman part 619-104.

Those morons. They show the SHO and the SLO as having the same caliper when they are using their Duralast brand, but when I asked them to check the Cardone brand he (the *****) says, "hey, there are two different listings, one for the SHO and one for the Non SHO". Arrrgh!! And I already painted them, well, I'm taking them back anyway. Morons.

Tom, I'll hit the junk yard this week and see if they have the parts you need. I take it you just need the caliper bracket, right?

Tom, I've got a pair of the correct brackets all bead blasted and ready to paint. You can have them for the cost of shipping, just PM me your addy again since I'm sure I've lost it.

Chris,

Maybe I'm missing something here. Is there a bracket that bolts between the caliper and the knuckle? I thought the caliper bolts right to the knuckle. The holes line up perfectly, just too close to the rotor's edge.

Yes, there is a caliper bracket for the 94+ brakes.

The '96 bracket allows you to run the bigger rotor as the caliper from the 94+ are virtually the same.

Autozone wasted my time in the same manner. Gave me wrong brackets while insisting they were correct. I also went to a junkyard and they gave me the same wrong brackets. In each case I was very particular in what I asked for, but still got handed the wrong part.

Annoyed and frustrated, I ended up buying the loaded '96+ SHO calipers at Advanced Auto. All Ford parts with FN74 stamped on the brackets. Put in some of my own ceramic pads and I was good to go. Also, FWIW, I put my old '94 calipers and brackets back in the boxes for the cores and returned them with no problems.

The Saga continues,

AutoZone didn't have the correct ones.
Checker can get them some day.
Napa had them but I only checked one of the boxes in the store and one turned out to be for some totally different car.

Took both of those back to NAPA this morning and called Carquest in north Phoenix, "we don't have them here but we can have them here in a couple of hours". Can I pick them up at your south Phoenix warehouse? "Yes, here are the correct numbers"

I get down there and they are both for the left side. Counter guy argues that since the boxes had the correct labels on them, the parts must be correct and I must be wrong because it shouldn't hurt to have the bleed screw on the bottom. *****.

At about this time I am fed up with Checker, AutoZone, NAPA, and Car Quest outlets.

I bite the bullet and call Ford of North Snotsdale. They can have the parts here in 3 hours. I brace myself for the worst when I ask him for the cost. He says, "is this Mr Dooley, Dusty's Dad?" Yes, I reply. "Well we can give you our best discount of 10 over". Hot damn, less than everybody else. I'm just hoping that they are the correct parts.

Thanks Eric, I might need some muscle down at AutoZone or NAPA.:)

Just got back from Ford and guess what. They had the wrong caliper for the right side also. What they listed as a SHO caliper was actually not. The left one was, so I could show him the difference. He
s going to order another one from the rebuilder since their stocking depot is out of the right ones now (they were out of the righthand side ones before, they just didn't know it.

I never thought it would be so difficult to get the right parts for this upgrade.

Oh, and the axles from NAPA were the wrong ones also. The only thing that NAPA got right was the 1500 grit sandpaper, and I picked that out.

I've now tried every big distribution company that has a Phoenix outlet for these axles. Does anybody happen to know the Rock Auto part numbers from PERSONAL experience for the left and right half shafts for a 91 SHO?

I'm about ready to go buy a new Mustang, that's how ****** I am at the parts people. And for those that know me, THAT'S ******.

Happy to help any way that I can... ;)

For what it's worth I got the new axle for the Pumpkin at the Autozone near me on Northsight just north of Raintree. They had the right one the first time. Dunno whether they can reproduce that performance or not, but...

R-Axles is the place to go for halfshafts.

Remember the caliper isn't Gen 3 SHO specific doesn't have to be the one that comes with the correct bracket. I also had the same problem getting the right side caliper. Apparently its a national problem as the store called a couple warehouses across the country and they were all the same. What I had them do is take the caliper out of another box for some other applicaiton and switch it to the 96 SHO bracket.

Doug and Doug,

Thanks for the info but I was hoping to do this local. Well, that's not going to happen now.
I know the piston side is common to other vehicles, it's just that the dealers can't or won't differentiate between the two different brackets. It just bugs me that they don't care very much.

Tom, if you're going to go the dealer route, you need to order the calipers and brackets separately:

LF caliper P/N: XF1Z-2B121-AA List $76.73
RF caliper P/N: XF1Z-2B120-AA List $78.15
Bracket P/N: F6OZ-2B134-AA List $61.52/ea (2 req. and the O in F6OZ is the letter "O" not the number zero)

I still have the two brackets put aside for you if you want them and I can mail them today. I'll be away from my PC the rest of the day but if you call Beth she can give you my cell #.
