Since it looks like I might have a dry bearing or two on the front of my 91 Minus, SHOAZ suggested that now would be a great time to do a 96 brake upgrade at the same time.

It seems as though I've given away one of my 95 hubs that I was going to use and was wondering if I could use hubs, rotors and calipers off of a 96 SLO. I've found several 96 and 97 SLO front ends with good rotors that I can get cheap. Or is the hub a no-go due to strut hole size?

Tom, I believe the only 96+ parts you can use are the calipers and brackets.

The hubs themselves are different between the 94/95 and 96 hubs.

You must use 94/95 knuckles and hubs.

I might be wrong though! Ive been doing research on this myself, and have never done the swap.

Get some cobra calipers and modifiy the brackets that come with them. You get dual piston aluminum calipers (half the weight of 96 calipers) that still fit under slicers.

To do either the 96 upgrade or the cobra upgrade you will need 94/95 knuckles and 96 rotors.

The knuckles are likely different as the balljoint is built into the knuckle on 96+ and into the lower control arm on the 94 and 95. The suspension was redesigned for the GenIII Taurus to improve anti-dive, etc., and the knuckles are generally not interchangeable. You really need 94/95 knuckles to do the job.

I had a really nice set of 95 knuckles that were OE from my silver car, but that Ivey guy is using them for paperweights now.

I think any 94/95 Taurus has those knuckles, though...

some of you guys make this pretty confusing. you have a pre 94 taurus, and i'm going to say taurus because the suspention is the same between taurus/sable and SHO with the excption of the thicker balljoint/controllarm. in order to use the 11.6" rotors you need to get some stearing knuckles (left and right) from a 94 or 95 taurus or sable. then you have several vehicles you can get calapers off of that are all the same. 96-99 SHO 95+ continental or 01-06 taurus then just pick up some cheap rotors and hawk or HPS (street) HP+ (street and track) pads i say cheap rotors because the pads will chew them up. if you feal the need you can also pick up some Earls stainless steel brake lines from jegs for $96~

*junkyard knuckles from 94 or 95 taurus or sable
*calapers from 96-99 SHO 95+ lincon continental or 01+ taurus. or you could just buy remanufactured calapers and return your old ones as cores (they will never know) i always hear the new calapers are super cheap. this would be a good time to upgrade to cobra calapers if you are so enclined.
*pads see above or use your judgment just don't use cheap pads or don't bother with the upgrade because good pads will make or break the upgrade. you MUST use the 96-99 SHO part number on the pads they are taller i'm not sure if the 01+ taurus uses the tall pad or not. i think it is 601 or something but the pad will sweep the entire rotor if it doesn't you have the wrong pad.

enjoy ripping your passangers face off when the high frction pads hit temp :D

Calipers from a 94/95 SHO work as well. No need to hit only GenIII stuff. The brackets from a 96+ are required, but the calipers are okay from 94 and up.

The 601 series pads are the smaller pads from 94/95. The 598 pads are larger and are correct for the 96+ SHOs. Either pad will work in a 96 upgrade, but the 598s do provide more contact area.

yea, i went through a whole ordeal with NAPA last year trying to get ahold of just the brackets for the upgrade...no matter what I told them, they always gave me the wrong bracket. IIRC you can get the Conti calipers, with pads, and the correct bracket for cheap though....

most parts stores have the brackets for 96 SHO listed wrong. better to tell them 99 SHO than 96

On a side (or should I say rear) note.
Check out my group buy on NOS rear calipers for the rear brake upgrade.

Thanks guys. I will be off to a salvage yard to find the missing parts sometime this week.

Tom, I still have the calipers from my 95, so at a minimum you can get them from me.

Usually, though, the way to get the brackets is to buy loaded calipers from Pep Boys (or whoever, talk to Mike) which come with the appropriate brackets. This has been an inexpensive route in the past, so I think Mike was even going that route.

But if you can't get calipers any other way you can certainly use mine. They're not getting much use. ;)

Yes, the calipers themselves are the same.

I agree with Eric, the best way to get the calipers/brackets is to buy loaded ones from the corner auto parts store. Then throw in some pads of your choice if you don't like the ones they come with, and some cheap Chinese rotors and you're good to go. Worthwhile brake upgrade for under $200. Plus your knuckles and bearings, of course.

Okay so this didn't work.

I got new 95 knuckes from a SLO

New 96 SHO loaded calipers from autoZone P4382

New 96 SHO rotors from AutoZone Duralast 54030

New bearings with existing hubs.

The problem is that it seems like the rotor is too big in diameter. The caliper bracket won't bolt up, too far away from the holes in the knuckle.

What am I doing wrong? Thanks for any input.

Tom

The caliper brackets that came with your setup are most likely not for the SHO...but for stock '96 SLO brakes.

Autozone has those listed wrong. Ask for either a 99 SHO or a 95 Lincoln Conti.
