Hello,
It has been awhile since I have been on here but I was hoping someone could help me with an issue my 94 SHO is having. It is a 3.2 automatic with approximately 157,000 miles. When it runs, it runs great. About 4 months ago I was driving it and about 30 mph and it just died. It would crank over but would not run. I had it towed to a local shop and they replaced what they called a control module (apparently located in the front center of the car) with a used one and it ran fine for about 4 months and then died again. This time the shop is sending the box to a place that rebuilds them. My main question is; could there be something that is causing the box to fry? This last time, a puff of smoke came up through the hood crack just as it died. I was sitting in a parking lot just idling with the a/c on. Also, is this a common thing to go wrong with these cars? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help. Larry

Sorry to say, but looks like you are dealing with a SHO-inexperienced shop. The problem can indeed lie with the CCRM, but it can be due to bad grounds, bad DIS, lack of heatsink on the back of the DIS, bad DIS connectors, bad crank sensor, bad cam sensor (not likely based on the symptoms here), etc.

When was the last time the 60K (yes, ATX is supposed to be 100K in some instances, see here) was done? Sure there are no oil/coolant leaks? Puff of smoke could be from oil (cam seal or main seal leaking onto the cat(s), for instance). Any smell that you could discern at the time - oily, electrical, etc?

The oil pressure light doesn't flicker I hope? Rattle/knock on startup? That COULD be rod bearings.

The parts are fairly sturdy, but they (particularly cam/crank sensors when installed incorrectly) do fail. Grounds very often are either missing or go bad on these cars, need periodic cleaning. If the car sits for any amount of time, it attracts pests that feed on the wiring/destroy it.

Maybe someone in the NWSHOC could take a look at it if they are close to your location?

does your shop pull codes? or do they just start replacing parts? because you really need to know what the codes are and tell us, so we can help you.
