The timing chains under the valve covers have a "rub strip" the can make a noise like you are describing.
Have someone who already has an automatic SHO listen to it, as they will know the difference.
You will know a lot about the SHO in a short while.

SHO source .....you can bet i will be ordering some parts soon.....:0 as far as i can tell the noise is comeing from underneath the timing belt cover and not from the driver side of the heads where i think the chains are located. The noise is a distintive deep growl with somewhat of a gear type pulse rate. like the teeth side of the belt is hitting some thing when the crank slows down and allows back lash to form in the belt, I heard one on utube and the only comment was 'belt tensioner is bad'. anyone want to jump in here and disagree?
Thanks.

I live in Great Falls MT.....Not much in the way of a SHO community here.
Thanks

Sounds like the timing belt tensioner is bad.

IT RUNS.....has a heck of a squeal from one of the idler pulleys though....I need to go get my home made mega phone and see if I can isolate it to one location. anyone ever use a funnel and a hose to isolate the squeal?

I would just pull the accessory belt off (it likely needs replaced anyway...) and spin the various idlers by hand - it will be pretty clear which one(s) are dry. If none of the external idlers squeal, start it for just one minute with the accy belt off - if it still squeals then you have a bad idler on the timing belt. On the atx cars, there are two idlers on the timing belt, one on the tensioner and one on the tight side of the belt. (You need to remove the timing covers to get to those.)

Thanks R .......it looks like the idler pulley on the spring loaded tensioner is going to be the problem. I removed both idler pulleys, tried my hand at repacking the upper fwd one. I still have the noise and the pulley on the spring loaded tensioner was not repacked. I can say that the fwd upper one above the ac feels bad, so I repacked it .....that was fun as i did not know you could pull the seal cover. ordered 2 new bearings and should get them next friday. Thanks again ...more later.
Rick
ps..I did remove the belt and run it for 30 seconds...the noise was NOT there so it has to be one of the external pulleys. ....... btw is is normal for the wp to make a slight noise when it is rotated by hand....does not sound like a metal sound....more like a rubber squeak ish noise. no leak or anything and the cooling system works good...just make a little sound when you spin it with the belt off,,,,kinda figure it is normal. (i hope)

if it is a rubber squeak type of noise you are ok for a while, I would conclude that the seals are getting hard which means that eventually it will either begin to leak or will let grease out of the bearing, depending upon which seal is leaking.
