94 mtx , recently new water pump, timing belt CPS . The temp gauge is running in the upper portion around the "N" when running around town or when you are going up hill . I have put in a replacement Thermostat and it even seem to run hotter. The next step is to replace the sensor. Could it be a faulty sending unit or do I have a different problem. Could it be I have not installed the timing belt to it correct position? The car run great but the temp guage is not right or it is running warmer than it should. Any suggestion?

timing won't cause an issue like this, don't worry about that.
first thing,id make sure the simple things are there coolant level, cooling fan is coming on like it should, ext.
this also could be caused by a faulty sending unit, like you said.

Do not rely on the in-dash stock temperature gauge to tell you it's running hotter than normal. They are notoriously inaccurate.

Use a non-contact IR thermometer to measure the temp of the water outlet at the thermostat housing. You can expect to see readings of anywhere from 195-215 with the stock 192 thermostat installed.

Putzing around without valid data is a sure way to waste time and money.

Make sure you check to see if the fan is running properly. When it is getting that hot pull over, pop the hood and check if it is running or not.

Hi.
I have the same problem with a SHO 1992. The temperature gets on letter N.
I changed the sensors, fan relay, Fan, termostatic valve and I continue with the problem. The radiator and water pump are new too.
The car was good, but sundently starts this problem.
If anybody solve this problems, please, let me know.
Next weekend I will check the radiator again and water pump. I don´t know if the impelitor on the water pump can be a problem.

^^ This is completely inaccurate.

Valve timing that is screwed up can cause the combustion temps to be too high, and this can result in the car running hotter than normal. My latest white 94 had the timing belt changed by the prior owner, and he apparently got the timing wrong. It wouldn't pass emissions and ran hot, even with new thermostat. I discovered the timing error when I had to change the crank position sensor, and fixing the timing resulted in the engine running at proper temp and passing emissions.

The other obvious thing that must be checked is the ground strap between the engine and the firewall. Some SHOs won't even run without this strap, but those that do run will have strange readings on the temp and fuel gauges and tach from the faulty grounding.

Wow, this is really spooky. I haven't been on the forum that much and today I sign on and there my post from a few years at the top of the field. And............ the post was about the car I was going on to get some info about but 70k later After reading all the post, I will double check the timing to make sure that wasn't the issue of the running a bit hot. I am in the middle of the 2nd 60k service I done on the car which was just before I posted the original post. Stranger things have happened! I guess everything happens for a reason.

There is nothing wrong with the gauge being on the letter N during slow driving in hot weather, provided the electric fan is cycling on and off as expected! If you want to check something, pressure test the system, and make sure it holds. Replace the cap with a new Motorcraft cap. If the radiator is ancient, it is worth the $100 investment to go ahead and replace it. Install a 180 degree Duralast thermostat and make sure the jiggle valve is properly oriented.
