I've got a resonance/vibration coming from the front of the car (seems to be trans side) that appears at 60 - 70 MPH and doesn't change pitch nor intensity up to 90 MPH. I can feel it in the steering wheel. It's kind of a constant "Buz z z z z z" that resonates throughout the front of the car. It's not cyclical like you get when a wheel is out of balance or a rotor is warped.

My question is this: At 60 MPH with the car coasting in Neutral @ 800RPM, is the trans pump running at the same speed as if the car was in Drive? The reason I ask is because the resonance doesn't go away when coasting. If the pump slows down in Neutral, then I think I can rule that out (I really hope it's NOT the trans!). It seems to be dependent on the speed of the vehicle - not the RPM's.

Lyle

The trans pump runs at engine speed, whether in gear or not. If its related to vehicle speed, its got to be tire or driveshaft related. cv joint?

New tires balanced. New Rotors. I too suspected CV - although they are non-OEM replacements (car only has 90k).

At this point I presume there's no visual check to determine CV failure - so.... Just wait until the symptom gets worse?

I've been told that the typical way a rebuilder fixes the cv joints is to hog out the ball races by hand to fit larger balls in there. If this is accurate, there is a lot of room for funny little noises as most people could not grind out that material in a consistent way. Its entirely possible that its only an irritant and that it will last just fine.
