i have a 92 mtx and found a brand new 94-95 alternator and was wondering what i need to do to make this one fit ? also what is the difference? and if anyone one else knows what ford did after 92 that would be considered an upgrade that would be useful to know

You need the whole cast AC/alt. bracket that bolts to the engine, plus the alternator bracket.

why did they change it? more amps? and why are more amps necessary?

The little 90 amp alternators are more expensive than the 94 - 95 alternators, and put out 30 amps less. You can get the late model 3G alternator for $88.00 on E-bay.
The "shortcut" in the thread above is a very complete description of how to do it.
The bracket (with the engine lifting lug) has to come from a 94-95 MTX.
The little 90 amp alternators had problems. They used to catch on fire. That is why they went to the 3G model.

sperold is correct.

Look-up TSB 96-21-4

Ford did a Safety Recall due to overheating, melting wires, and electrical fires in the 2G alternators that would occur in the wiring harness, when the alternator started going bad . . . .
