hello peoples, im new here and had a couple of questions about my 93 sho. im about to buy it from this guy for 500 bucks. he says the car is overheating and he doesnt know why so to get the problem off his hands and selling it to me dirt cheap.the car runs with no smoke from the pipes no engine vibration and shifts damn good. the car is green has sunroof, stick shift, leather the works. im buying it no matter what but my question is whats some pretty common things that goes wrong with these cars andcause them to have these sort of problems. worst case scenario is the head gaskets. if so im prepared to print out a writeup and begin the tear down. is my sho a 3.0 or a 3.2:wave: .
The 5spd MTX cars come with the 3.0's. The ATX's come with the 3.2's. $500 for a running SHO is quite the steal, as your already prepared to pull the heads if the head gaskets are indeed bad (not a common occurence on these motors), but that's a worst case scenario. Does the car leak coolant? A bad Water Pump will cause the car to overheat. The same goes for a bad Radiator, Thermostat, or ECT sensor. Check those out first.
As for common problems with these cars. . . . . . neglegance of maintenance. I'd start with a FULL 60k, unless it's already been performed.
Upper(plugs, wires, valve cover gaskets/plug well seals, intake gasket set, valve lash, upper rad hose, thermostat),
Front (water pump, timing belt, crank & cam seals, crank sensor, lower rad hose), and
Lower (Rod Bearings, O2 sensors) would constitute a FULL 60K maintenance. Rod Bearings are very significant because they commonly take a vacation/spin, taking the crank with them. Definately want to get that done.
If you can perform all the labor yourself on the above mentioned parts, it should cost you no more then $600 (depending on the vendors you choose) maybe even less. So for $1100 you will have one happy motor. Then there's everything else, but I assure you keeping up with the maintenance will keep a smile on your face as your passing other motorists with a WTF look on their face.

Good luck!
