The car is at 140K miles and as a SHOshop LPM. I know a rebuild is probably inevitable, but I thought I'd ask if there might be any way to get a little more life out of it. The car will only engage 1st and reverse. If I let off the gas a little in 1st, you can feel it trying to grab second, but it never enages and just slips. The only way to get going again is to stop and let it start out in first again. So, I'm wondering if there is any hope that I could get a little more life out of this trans by 1. doing a transmission fluid flush, or, 2. changing the VSS. - Any thoughts?

Also, does anyone think that removing the SHOshop LPM and going back to the stock programming might improve the problem?

I've read most of the threads about the 93 ATX and I know it's a turd, but if there's any way I can nurse it a little longer I will.

Thanks in adavance for your replies.

Yeah I'd start by pulling the LPM out, but it looks like a rebuild is in the near future.

Not sure if this even works anymore with all the electronic controls, but the sleazy used car mechanics of days past used to put a bit of sawdust in the tranny to bandaid a problem and sell a car.

Do you have any problems with your cruise control? If so, then your VSS might be to blame. Try pulling your codes (if you haven't done so already) and let us know what you find. It also wouldn't hurt to pull the LPM, although I doubt it's the source of your problems. What's the mileage on the this '93?

How about the fluid condition? If it is smoked, I think it is time to visit your local transmission shop. If it is clean and smells good. On the back of the transmission in the middle is a servo cover. You could pull it off and check that servo. It controls the 1-2 upshift. However, I think you are going to have burnt fluid, and a trip to the rebuild shop in the near future. In either case, good luck.

Thanks for the replies. I just bought the car for $1000 knowing the trans has problems. The previous owner gave me all the maintenance records and I could only find one receipt in there for a trans flush. That's not a good sign.

Hopefully, this weekend I will have time to check the codes, check the fluid, and remove the LPM. I'll update this thread with findings.

My 93 ATX did the same thing three times. I only had first and reverse. Basically the transmission needed a total rebuild. All the internals were replaced by Ford the first two times. That only lasted 30k miles. The third total rebuild was done by a performance shop that put in all the updated parts and an oil dam. So far I have 50k miles on the rebuild with no problems.

My ATX was setting codes that suggested problems with the transmission(incorrect gear ratio obtained for second and incorrect gear ratio obtained for third)
